The other day I was in a store, I'm not going to mention what store, but they had a ballistic knife for sale. It was $150, and going by the pics on VG's website, it was complete. Now, I was under the impression that the mere possession of such an item was highly illegal. Am I right, or is there some loophole that would allow someone to own one?

Did it have a spring in it? I remember seeing some for sale years ago, but you had to purchase the spring separately.

Those things are a jail-cell waiting for a customer.:D.

Bad news all around, other than auto's, I believe they're the only knives that have Federal restrictions against them. For a while they were sold in parts form, as was stated, to by-pass the law.

They're also a bit shoddy and hazardous in construction/design, so you might want to think about that also.

It's a knife with a heavy compressed spring in the handle. When a safety lever is released, the spring shoots the blade from the handle.

And if you miss do you then throw the handle? Seriously though, even with FL's very generous CCW the only banned items are these knives and full auto anything. I could be wrong, but the way I read it (and I have a CCW) anything else is ok as long as you can conceal it (well, perhaps not suppressors).

Oh, don't worry, I wasn't even considering buying it. All the parts were there, spring included, but it looked like it had been used quite a bit. From the way it sounds, you'd be better off caught with a machine gun than one of these things.

Yikes. Sounds quite leathal. Are these spring strong enough to push a blade through soft tissue and the like upon deployment?

kbog, they are probably just as lethal as any other knife if they hit something vital. Maybe even a little more so since they're flying at a high rate of speed. But from what I've read, they're pretty much useless at a distance. If you miss, you're left with nothing but a metal handle.

Here's a link with info on ballistic knives. The second one is the type that I saw.
