I just received a bunch of 2.5GL Scepter plastic water storage canisters. Could someone please clue me in on what to add in the water for preservation? How long does the preservation treatment last? Would you soak the insides with something for a few days before you fill them up for storage? Please let me know.

By the way these are first rate and made in Canada. You never know what you are going to receive until it shows up at your door step. I was keeping my fingers crossed and praying that they were not made in China. They all say Canada as advertised.

Congrats! Scepter makes great water and fuel containers. I've deployed and used both in some pretty harsh conditions. Get a few extra gaskets for spares...not so much for wearing out, but I've had one fall out at some point when filling up and didn't realize until we got home.

Best water treatment for long term storage is aerobic oxygen. For medium storage (annually), simple, plain bleach will work. Even easier is to just rotate the water every six months or so and you really don't need any treatment. For cleaning out, I use Oxyclean...just a small spoon full, half a container of water and swish around. We never really used additional treatment in our Army water cans and some of these sat for months in 100+ temperatures.

Are these the 2.5 gallon versions of the 5 gallon Military Water Cans (MWC)? If so, you have the best water container existing, IMO.

To prep the cans, just rinse them out a couple times, fill with water.

If it's tap water from a city municipal system, preservatives aren't really necessary. If it's well water, then add chlorine per this: http://ohioline.osu.edu/aex-fact/0317.html

Water doesn't go bad: if it's clean when it goes in, it will stay clean, assuming the container is also clean, which your new midget MWCs are.

Good luck.

BTW, you can buy 5 gallon MWCs for $19 each from buylci.com. Click on the "shop now" button, upper right, then search on "water can". Free shipping for orders over $50; order today and you'll probably have them by Monday. No affiliation, just have heard nothing but good about lci.

Albin, how do you know that these are Scepter water cans? There is nothing on the uylci.com web sight that says they are. The inventory numbers don't match up with the numbers on the web sight. I just want make sure I don't get knock offs from China. Thanks Albin and ROCK6 for your feed back.

The cans from LCI are made by LCI in Mississippi and are some tough SOBs. Definitely not China-made knock-offs. I've got several LCI water cans and a couple Scepter gas cans, and aside from the basic differences between water cans and gas cans in general, the quality is the same.

LCI is a government contractor. http://www.buylci.com/about.htm

What he said.

They're MWCs, toughest water can on the planet. As I said, I've heard nothing but good about both LCI and their MWCs.

Buy with confidence.
