"Schrade not made in USA anymore?"

I've known since the plant closed, but I have been looking at prices of the desert ironwood models produced by China. Looking at the feedback of a seller on eBay, I saw that they had a negative. The buyer actually gave them a negative for a Chinese made Schrade, saying that Schrades were made in the USA, they weren't made in China, and that this seller had duped them. Now, I couldn't access the original auction, so I couldn't tell if the seller sold it as a USA made Schrade, or if the buyer was unaware that Schrade had gone belly up in the US. Anyway, members of this sub forum and those in the Traditionals forum know that Schrades are made in China now, but how many of the general public that used to buy their Schrades at the department store, hardware store, farm store etc are aware that they are made in the USA?

To add, I am looking to get the desert ironwood stockmans, all three sizes, but was surprised to see someone get bad feedback for this.

It's hard to say whether or not the negative feedback was deserved. If the buyer didn't know that Taylor Schrades are made in China, that's his own fault. But if the seller didn't clearly state the knife was a current-production, didn't mention "Taylor Brands" anywhere in the description, or didn't show a clear image of the tang, then they deserve the Negative.

My whole point wasn't whether or not feedback was deserved, but how many of the knife buying public actually know that Schrade isn't in the USA anymore?

Maybe the difference is knife buying and knife collecting. I have ran into a few a Schrade owners and had an Old Timer knife for years, and liked the knife, but had no idea it was made by a company named Schrade, much less the company had gone out of business.

I dont know about the bad feedback ,but rather than buying thoes china made desert ironwood stockmans, you could find some other china made junks for a lot cheaper and they will be just as junky. I ve hated every one Ive ever picked up. someone here said that they couldnt even open one of them up without a pliers. I will drive around in my truck throwing money out the window before I will give any of it to taylor schrade... If it even deserves to be called schrade. which it dosent. its more like taylor scrap.

I don't know, but I bet that statistic is very close to the number of people who care. Remember, that seller only got one Negative, compared to how many Positive points?

Let's settle on a new term to describe Chinese made Schrades. Chinese + Schrade = Chirade, pronounced like "charade," which is what most here think it is.

If a seller is not upfront about the country of origin, then he may deserve the Neg. But if he had not already left Pos feedback for your purchase, you may get a Neg even tho you did everything you were suppose to.
I just bought one in a last minute auction, and did not have time to ask, but the title said USA, but the auction did not have a clear picture, so when it arrives, and it is chi-com, I will leave a Neg, even tho I may get one back.

I believe I am correct here, but since the Schrade plant closed in 2004, anything with Schrade name is made in China. The Desert Ironwood, Ram's Horn and other exotic handle materials that Schrade did not routinely offer are also made in China. The Walden and Schrade Walden names are licensed to Camillus and Bear and Sons. These are made in the USA, but are not marked just Schrade. Further, Camillus is now closed as well.

If you use the search function you can come up with a lot of threads discussing this same subject.

For some resaon the rest of this thread didn't come up and all I got to read was the first post. I am truly sorry for my redundant answer and would delete it, but we can't delete on this forum.

That's the problem - how to tell the difference between the original and current production Schrades. eBay is a jumbled mess of both, with some sellers being particularly dishonest or evasive. Also, even after three years, people are still finding the originals in out-of-the-way stores. Heck, some popular online retailers (SMKW and AG Russell) are still selling original Schrade items.
