I wasn't exactly sure where the correct area was to post this so I figured I can't go wrong with the general discussion area.

I've been checking out the Schrade SCHF9. Looking for something to carry with my Rush 24 backpack. Anyone have one? What are your thoughts? I have no real purpose for the knife other than just to have an extra knife. Thanks.

I don't have one, but if it were me I would spend a little more money to get a better quality knife and support a company that doesn't rip off makers and hurt the industry as a whole. Not that that means anything, it may very well be a good knife.

I would say it's a poor choice, just on a quality standpoint.

Schrade is not known for quality products. They are well-known for, and very consistent with, poor quality knives. In that price range, I would seriously suggest looking at Cold Steel, Ka-Bar, Becker, and Mora. Those are brands that are made with a consistently high level of quality.

But, that assumes regular use. If you just want a backup knife that only needs to be sharp once or twice and stand up to relatively light use, then the Schrade is a perfectly fine choice. For regular or long-term use, I stand by my suggestions above.

What Strong-Dog I believe is trying to say, is that in years past, Schrades quality was impeccable (Ie, Uncle Henry and Old Timers)
However, in '04 they went bankrupt (Please someone correct me if i'm wrong about how they went under) And closed their doors.
They got picked up by Taylor Brands LLC, and the quality of their knives in mediocre, I have an old Schrade stockman I got from my Dad, one of the best knives I've ever owned. About a year and a half or so ago, I got myself a new schrade, having no knowledge of them being low end stuff now, and the lock joint is wobbly and needs tightened down all the time, the steel won't hold and edge, etc... I want to like it, and I still carry it once in a while, but they aren't worth spending your money on in my opinion.

Not sure they filed bankruptcy, but they went out of business and auctioned everything. Taylor didn't do anything unlawful or underhanded, it's just business.

But a lot of people resent that the fine old Schrade name was "resurrected" almost immediately after the "funeral" and on lower quality knives, many or most made in China. And if one is seeking an Old Timer, one needs to be careful about buying those made in China. A lot of retailers are not very specific about whether they are selling made in USA new old stock or the Chinese version and it can be hard to tell from a photo.

Thanks for the comments. I really wasn't following whatever Stroin-Dog was alluding to. I did not know the history of the Schrade name. I only knew that the name has been around for a long time and that I've always heard they were a decent company.

Didn't mean to imply anything negative about Taylor Brands with the way I phrased that, sorry.
Any USA Schrades usually are stamped as such on the blade, so pictures help.
Nola, USA Schrades in my opinion are extremely good knives for the money (When you can find them at a fair price.)

Check out Preparedmind101 on YouTube. He is really impressed with some of the products that Schrade has put out in the last 2-3 years. Seems as though Taylor Brands decided to step it up some. If you follow his channel you'll know that they also really listen to their customers. Now, I must say...there are probably better brands out there. However, saying that all the knives that this company make are crap is not true, because apparently they're getting better!

I suppose it may be worth it, but I'd rather spend the money on something that I know will be worth it, instead of something that may not be worth what I spent on it.
It's all up to you though.

Jfalkos, thanks, i'll take a look at it! It'd be nice if they could come up to the quality of the overseas offerings Buck has.

i have an schf9 not abad knife at all but as stated you can get a bk2 bk10 or bk7 and have a surefire pack knife!

Nah, I dont think you did. But a lot of people's rage about the "resurrection" tends to paint Taylor in an unethical or unlawful light (see Strong's post, for example). I get the rage (really more sadness on my part), I really really do. But Taylor just pulled a savvy business move. It would be trademark infringement, but Schrade was kaput, therefore completely legal to trade on their good name (although Schrade quality had been in a nosedive for a year or two before the demise).

I think the worst thing in many people's minds are close copies of original knives made. The resemblances seem to be a little too close. They are making stuff that is about 95% the same as Grayman, Crusader Forge, ProTech, CRK, Zero Tolerance, Medford, and a ton of others. The old Schrade company was a awesome, this new Taylor Brands version, not so much.

Do they listen to customers or people they give free products to for testing? Go ahead and give them a call and let us know how far you get...

Opinions about the "new" Schrade are right up there with the "new" Camillus, and while I'm sure that there are plenty of people who have actually bought and used the knives, many of the opinions floating around have a lot to do with brand history, country of original, materials and marketing hype. Yes, you can get something better than an imported Schrade for a bit more money, but sometimes that price difference represents a large chunk of a limited budget that might be needed for other things. If I'm going on a day hike or a fishing trip, I want to have a good knife with me, but I might want to spent a little bit more on more appropriate boots or rain gear or whatever. If spending a bit less on a knife (that might not get used at all) means leaving something extra to improve a more critical item, that's how it will go down.

My go-to fixed blade knife is a Schrade. In fact, I have two of the same model, with one being American and the other Chinese, made just before and after Taylor took over. For my purposes, they are 100% interchangeable. I never owned a Schrade while the company was actually making knives in America, so I have no sentimental attachment to the brand. Same with Camillus. I respect people's reasons for not wanting to support these brands under their current ownership, and I personally prefer to buy knives made just about anywhere other than China (such as Condor, Mora, etc.) but won't ignore a "modern" Schrade if it suits my needs. It's just a matter of what is the highest priority. Meanwhile, debates over Ontario vs. Rat vs. ESEE can continue on unabated.

I own one, and it is a solid well made knife. However, the sheath is low quality, And I do not like the handle ergonomics at all.

I have taken the knife out with me and tried it For a full day in the woods. I found that it is not the best chopper, and the handle has serious hotspots. After a full day of chopping and the battoning, my hand had several severe blisters. I do not Have this problem with my Becker knives.

The Knife has good edge retention, and held up well to the job. However the ergonomics of the handle are in my opinion terrible. I would highly recommend a Becker BK7 over this knife.

AMAZING KNIFE for the money. I hammered it into a tree and completely hung on it. It has never failed me. But it is a little heavy for a backpack knife at about a pound. If weight isnt a problem absolutely get it
