Schrade scrimshaw set in antique store...

Found a set of Schrade knives I haven't seen before and can't seem to find any info on. Was hoping someone here could offer some insight to a long time lurker and owner of several Schrades...

It was a set of scrimshaw knives, both appeared to be new and unused/sharpened. They were in a fingerbox joined wooden box and it said Schrade on the top and had one canoe style 2 blade and a stockman style 3 blade knife.

On closer inspection, I noticed that the stockman was manufactured in London, England and the Canoe was made at the New York facility. IIRC, both had nautical themes sketched/engraved onto the handles. All of this was seen from behind a glass case and I couldn't get any other info other than the manufacture date appeared to be 1983.

Asking price was 70.00 for the set. I thought that to be quite reasonable. Does anyone have any idea what these sold for new ?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a Schrade Wostenholm set I have at home. If they are in unused condition, I would say $70.00 is a very fair price based on what I paid and have subsequently seen them sell for.

They appeared to be in unused condition. I'll have to get them to take them out of the display case to make sure.

Tempted to run get them in the morning. Your post has only fanned that fire. Any other comments greatly appreciated.

And any pics you could post would help me judge the condition. The wooden box appered to be weathered over the years but that may be the way they came new. And it must be a Wostenholm collaboration as the few images I could find on the net had that same IXL as this set had on it's wooden box lid.

After pouring through old threads, the knives in question look like the ones in post three of this thread.

My guess is "IF" the knives in ? are the real bone handels/ scales, and especially unused/unblemished they are well worth the $, based on Erics post which you bring into the thread!

PS. lwt210, since they are at the antique store make a lower offer!!?? Can't hurt anything

Yeah, I can't remember if they appeared to be bone or the other type of scrimshaw/derlin type.

They sure looked identical to those in that other thread. I can't search so had to pour through all pages since the beginning.

Problem is I have spent too much on knives already this month. Bought two Uncle Henry USAs (both old stock NIB/a trapper and a LB7), two USA Old Timers and a Case trapper.

Gonna sleep on it and hit them first thing in the morning. They open up at ten.

lwt210 is this the set you are contemplating buying? don't know how much they sold them for back in the 80's although going by the prices of individual knives I would think well over $100 see the link attached.

Yeah, that's the set. Right down to the images, IIRC.

That pic there, that is the real bone, right? If so, I'll probably go get them first thing in the am. I was in there today around 2:30 so I am 90 percent sure they will still be there.

Funny thing is that everything else in the place was way over priced. I figured this set was a bargain. I didn't see a certificate with it but it may be in the box somewhere. I'll "fine tooth comb" them tomorrow and then if they pass inspection, pull the trigger.

LWT210, how long does it take to drive from Kansas to Alabama? i think I can make it by daylight if I take the short cuts? :D ;)

Beauty shot Russell. That box alone is worth $25.00.

Good luck hope you come home with them, yes they are bone handles.

Depends on how fast you drive.

I think you sold me an Uncle Henry trapper the other day on the bay. I remember the avatar.

If it is, beauty of a knife. So pretty I polished it, honed it a little and put it in the safe.

Great to have you on the forum. Glad you liked it. Good luck on the scrims. Yup there's only one thawk.

Yeah, I have not posted before but have read a lot on here. Seems like a good bunch of folks.

Just won a large UH stockman. Now how am I going to sneak the scrims and the USPS package in the house?

:thumbup:ah Heck just buy a bottle of perfume or somthing for the bride:D and sneek to the safe while she ogles the box she'll never be the wiser for it;). Then next time she see's inside the ole hiden box teller had them things six months just rearranged and put them on the top of the pile:p.

not to give away ideas here, although packages delivered to work can be effective.

Ahhh, the freedom of a partner-free life. i could buy 100 knives per week; my dog never "bitches"(female dog) at me, and my soon to be 3 yr. old daughter has the right attitude: "wow daddy, nice knives". infact, i'm helping her start her own knife collection. she's into red handles at this point, so i "gave" her the Paul Revere. sometimes we trade. roland

Lol....that dog thing is illegal in Alabama.

Nah, I got them. Just got done taking some snapshots. I'll try to post them in a bit.

Serial numbers matched, had both the original warranty cards intact and un-written on, and both knives were blessed to have the original factory grinds and were pretty much scratch free.

I lightly polished up the nickle bolsters a little.....they are fine. I'll post a pic or two in a bit if i can figure it out.
