My question is this: what is the difference between these two knives? Through reading the catalogs the 136 is referred to as a "lineman's skinning knife" and the 186 is called a "large pruning knife". The only major difference I can ascertain is the presence of the shackle. Except for graphics printed on the 136, are the blade profiles identical?

I don't own either knife, but from what I read, the 186 is 4 7/8" long and the 136 is 4 7/16". Along with the shackle you mention, that is the only difference I notice.

Thanks for the link. You are correct, I was reading from another source. From your link, it does appear that the only difference is the shackle.

i have both the 186 and the 136 the blades are very close mine probably has a worn blade for the 136. the blades themselves do look the same although on the 136 the pattern number is on the same side as the
Schrade Walden
NY USA
136
and the 186 the patter number is on the reverse with its stamping being:
Schrade
Walden
NY USA.
now this might be a feature of when they were manufactured but the 136 has small pins with a shackle and the 186 had larger pins and a more rounded handle. the 136 has a rough wooden handle and the 186 is smoother.
in the photo the 186 is to the left. along with a 163 (middle) and a 175 ( i think)
