ok guys,I'm a newbie, and i open this topic to ask your help.

I'm looking for a folding knife, and the most important peculiarity is: it must not be cr*p.

so I'd like to know what do u think about this manufacturer, and in particular what do u think about this model: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Schrade-X-T...81947QQcategoryZ48820QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

do you think i sould take something else if i'm concerned about quality?

any suggestion will be appreciated, thank you in advance and sorry for my bad english.

My local feed & seed store got in that whole line last year for xmass, sold them for $9.99 and my older brother bought one in Nov. and has been carrying it every day since, it's not the super best knife in the world, but it has held up just fine and took and keeps a surpisingly good edge for such a low cost knife.

The seller is being a little vague with this statement, "(NOTE) This item is by the new manufacturer of Schrade knives."

That means it's made in China if that is important to you.

I have an X-Timer made by the Imperial Schrade Corp. in the USA. The fit is very good, especially for a Schrade.

Unfortunately Imperial-Schrade went out of business in 2004 and the "new" Schrade products are imported by Taylor LLC. from China. From everything I've read, the Chinese models to not compare in quality to the USA-made Schrades. I haven't handled one personally though.

BTW, Smoky Mountain Knife Works has the same knife for the same price, and you don't have to "bid" on it.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

i would personally stay away from it. i have schrades and imperial-schrades (however, i do not have the X-Timer), and none of them are that great. and those are the ones that weren't made in china. if you give the guys here some specifics of what you're looking for in a knife and a ceiling price, i'm sure you will get great recommendations.

well, what i'm looking for is a sturdy knife who won't snap close in your hand if u apply some pressure on the blade, and who's comfortable in the hand. ceiling price would be something like 30 usd.

anyway, thank you all for your advices, they've been really appreciated ;)

You get a LOT of knife for your money with the Victorinox 110 mm line of knives and I'm sure they're readily available in Italy, no problem. At the low end of this line, price wise, you'll find the Alpiner and Cow Boy. Will you get as much tactical ninja "cool factor"? Maybe not. But guys who know knives understand that in the under-$30 category, these are going to whip the pants off most any other knife out there.

Another option would be to track down something from Spyderco's Byrd line of knives. These consistently get good reviews from the Spydie nuts over here.

Let us know what you decide, please, and how it works out. Good luck.

I agree with mnblade. Victorinox is good, and so is the Spyderco Byrd line.

You can find several of the Byrd models for $30 (probably less) and maybe even with G10 handles which are very nice. The Cara Cara is the biggest, I think, with a 3 7/8" blade. I also have a bunch of Vics. mnblade's links are very helpful.

You can probably find something nice from Buck Knives as well. I have a Buck Pilot that's pretty decent for around $25. It's thin with a sturdy frame lock. Since I know you use ebay, you can find all of these easily on ebay and for good prices.

thank you guys,i went for a spyderco cara cara in the end. why do some express so many appreciations for G-10(i didn't know which one to take between this one and the cara cara, but i prefered a plain edge,so i took the second),aren't they almost the same knife?

lux, I suspect you're going to be very very impressed with that knife. Enjoy it.

G10 is just a bit nicer material for the handle. that's all. it has nothing to do with the blade. i think you made a good choice! let us know how you like it when you get it if you get the chance. enjoy

yeah, thanks guys,u saved me from buyng a chinese knife and a good one, because most probably i would have been disappointed by the first one,and then i would have bought a better one.

i'll let u know,and... thank again! :)

I think so, but i forgot to switch the shipping address on ebay and it'll arrive on my native house in the country. so i have to wait to go back there for easter vacation to enjoy it :(

well the Byrd is technically a chinese knife as it is made in china, but yeah the cara cara was probably a better choice.
