I am looking for suitable scissors for cutting thick tough stuff such as rubber mats. Thanks for any recommendations.

Might try tin snips.

My utility scissors are cheap EMT style - work for most stuff but rubbers mats not so sure.

Always a utility knife as last resort.

My Vet gave me a pair of short, I guess EMT style shears to cut my dog's cast off of his body. I don't know of the brand, but they have short thick blades and are angled for better leverage. A medical supply catalogue would probably have them.

For tough stuff, I like the Fiskars, titanium nitride coated scissors sold in Home Depot and other places, The 4&1/2" blades have tiny serrations on one edge which inhibit slippage on thicker materials. The plastic finger cutouts are very thick and ergonomically curved. I have found they largely eliminates discomfort when applying strong force.

That being said it is hard to know if they would cut your rubber matting or if you need compound leverage snips or something more. It all depends on consistency, toughness and thickness of the material being cut. The drawback of compound leverage snips is they take small bites and progress is slower than with a pair of scissors. Scissors also tend to do a neater job and would probably be the best thing to use if they work. A utility knife could work but might require scoring more than once to sever the material. Hope that helps.

The best set of hard use scissors I ever had were actually CutCo. I cut pennies and non ferrous sheet stock with them and then immediately cut light paper right after, no problems. They have a "T" style pivot for easy disassembly and are dishwasher safe.
