Scissors --- Multi-tool... WHY????

Okay, so I have not been on this forum in a long, long time. I am now trying to catch up. I have been busy with, well lets just say work and leave it at that.

My question is for all your multi-tool fanatics, such as myself. I love them, would love to buy all of them if I win the lotto.

Why do you need scissors on a multi-tool? I have never figured this one out. I own mostly tools that have scissors, and just got a Schrade Tough Tool at Wal-mart in the clearance basket. It does not have scissors and I don't even miss them. In fact on my Wave and my Gerbers, I have yet to use the scissors for anything other than playing with them when I first bought them.

So why in the world does everyone make a big deal over the scissors? Does anyone use them for anything??? If so, what???

Well, thanks again.

Well, for those of us with whiskers they do a fine job of emergency wild moustache hair removal. I hate those ones that grow curly Q and tickle my nose. Also good for trimming loose threads. There could be other instances where you wanted to get into a tight place and do a surgical "snip" rather than a prying type of cut with a blade.

I dunno...I really like the scissor of my Leatherman Micra. I have used it "more than once" to trim-off a snag on one of my fingernails, or to snip-off a hang-nail (it's better than ripping them off and then bleeding like a stuck pig!).:).

I seem to use the scissors a lot. I use the scissors much more than the knife blade on multitools, and on Swiss Army Knives too.

On this deployment I failed to pack nail clippers so... I also use them to trip loose threads off my DCUs and opening some of the smaller MRE packets where a blade would be cumbersome or dangerous. Especially good for the drink mix packets where you just want to cut off a corner to pour the powder into a bottle of water. So far since I've been here on my Leatherman I've used the scizzors, plain knife blade, pliers, phillips screwdriver, 2 sizes of flat screwdriver, coarse file, fine file, and can opener. I even tried to use it as a hammer. In Kuwait I used the saw blade because I didn't have a keyhole saw, worked great.

Wouldn't the REKAT SIFU do as well.?.:D  ;)

Are you the same Judge Blackhawk from the Sixgunner message board (and Sixguns, I assume)?

The Internet keeps getting smaller and smaller...

I use the scissors on my Micra all the time. In fact, that's the main reason I carry it. If the Supertool 200 had a good pair of scissors on it, it would be perfect. I didn't think much about carrying scissors until I started doing it and realized how much I used them. The blades on my multi and mini tools, on the other hand, I never ever use.

Well, I have used the SAK scissors for removing bandages to avoid ripping open a wound with the tip of a knife, or pulling off a scab by ripping a band-aid\bandage off.

Also for the above mentioned beard\mustache\nosehair\nail trimming.

My daughters always seem to need something snipped off of their dolls etc.

Very good for snipping the new braided fishing lines.

As of yet I don't have a multi-tool with scissors, but my next one will probably have them. I would in fact rather have more useful small tools on a multi-tool than have any type of blade at all. The steel is usually crap, and I rather make room for more tools. I usually carry at least one large folder and a one of the smaller verison SAK's with both large and small blades for detail work.

Yes, sir I am the one and same Judge Blackhawk from sixgunner.com. I have not had time to write lately, since I have been trying lots of criminals across the Great State of Texas. I hope to find some time to get back to my writing. It is one of my best pleasures and a way for me to express my feelings of patriotism and respect for our men and women who wear our Country's uniform. I will forever be grateful to them, and forever envious. They are the true American heroes and deserve our undying love, honor and gratitude.

May God in His wisdom grant us all the joy and peace that is life in Christ. May He protect each of our service men and women and may He welcome those that are called from this Earth.

God bless you all,

Forever in Liberty and Justice,

Judge Blackhawk

Judge, your, tag line says a mouthful about what's happening in
our country right now.

As to the Scissors . multi-tool question ......
I carry a Pulse from time to time and find the
scissors to be a minor useful feature. They are
not intended to be a main tool as the screwdrivers and such.
Other than the Pulse I carry a micra / EMT shears too and
a supertool to keep the functions within design parameters.

Cutting paper at work.

Opening plastic bags of food. Because the material is so flexible, I find that it is easier with scissors.

Clipping coupons, magazine articles, and newspaper articles.

Trimming fingernails/hangnails.

Cutting anything around people who might be disturbed by a blade. Believe it or not, there are even some who don't like the clip point blade on the LM Wave.

Just chimming in because like many others, I find the scissors used a lot either on my Micra or a SAK - I'm not usually without one or the other, the Micra at the office, the SAK at all other times. Quick clothing repair (sewing and such) is usually easier with scissors, and of course moustache trimming and nail cutting. Bandages are also easier to deal with using scissors, as is cutting through clothing if you have to open something up that way to get to a wound. I've used my Micra scissors to open the plastic wrapper containing a child's toy when pulling out even my small knife would have raised eyebrows. This on an airplane of course prior to 9/11. I wouldn't have either now.

Bottom line though is that scissors are actually better than knives for many very common cutting tasks one finds when in civilization as compared to outside of it.

Yes sir, I believe that in our country we are seeing the demise of the greatest Republic the world has ever known, and it is all the name of Homeland Security.

When a government can not trust it's people, then the government can no longer be trusted. What we have now is an out of control federal and state government system that is wrapping itself in protecting the peace and tranquillity, while behind the scenes it is destroying the very basis of Freedom and Liberty. There can be no Freedom or Liberty when Constitutional rights are deminished in the name of security.

A tyrannical government will rise out of the ashes of a restrictive Republic.

May we all wake up before it is too late, and even our beloved multi-tools will become "Assault Weapons".

God Bless the PEOPLE of AMERICA.

Judge Blackhawk

I used to think the same thing. I just went on a week vacation with the family and brought my Pulse. Opened it twice - both times for scissors. Once to remove a bothersome label from inside my daughter's bathing suit, once to cut off a plastic "T" from a tag on a new pair of shorts. Both could have been cut with a knife, but a lot easier with scissors. I cut a lot of tags off new clothes with a knife, but you have to be pretty dexterous to hold the tag taut in your fingers, while catching the part that always falls on the floor when you cut with the other hand.

Yes, I suppose it would, but if I were to slip-up with my Sifu and kut myself, I'd be bleeding like a RUNNING stuck pig!.:D.:D.

I tend to use multi-tool scissors, especially on my SAK's and Micra, but if neither is available, then the one on either my Pulse or Wave do the job. The little ones on the SAK's are great even for trimming those bothersome nose hairs (eeww!). I'm fairly obsessive about keeping those hairs trimmed, because when I see others' protruding nose hairs it becomes kind of a distraction. :barf: :D :D

I rarely use the scissors on my Pulse or Wave, but the Micra is great for decent work requiring scissors, and the Victorinox SAK ones are best for extreme precision cutting.

I always carry a SAK, and use the scissors more that any other implement. It's handy for quick beard-trimmings and for everything else. Aside from the SAK, the only multitool I carry with any regularity is the Leatherman Crunch, which doesn't have scissors.

Judge, and all others reading: Do you recall a famous line that Mel Gibson spouted in "The Patriot"? (Funny thing having two Aussies as lead and supporting lead in what is ostensibly an American show :D ) He said something like, "Can you tell me why I should trade a tyrant six thousand miles away for six thousand tyrants one mile away? An elected legislature can trample a man's rights just as easily as a king."

At the time, I thought it was funny. But as I think about it, those words are starting to echo true.

Back on topic, I use the scissors for hang nails, or even just general trimming, cutting thread when I perform sewing repairs, cutting small things that require a little more control. I have found them quite useful, and would no doubt have more scars if I didn't have them. :p
