something in the transmission in my wife's beloved 2001 suburban went kaput last pm

2500 minimum to fix, not interested in that. will buy another vehicle

it sounds bad, but still drives, but who knows for how long

what can i expect to get for it as a junker? it is high mileage but has been well maintained and has lots of relatively new parts in it :( and weighs as much as a battleship

Put in on Ebay. You probably get more than the scrap value which is about $200 tops.

Scrap value is different from salvage value.
Scrap value is so much per ton (around 72.50)
Salvage value can be much higher, probably over 1000 dollars. Salvage is when parts will be sold off of it and scrap is when it's crushed and not salvaged.
Most vehicles are stripped of usable parts, in the scrap yard before they are crushed. Even if you sell it for scrap and only get a per ton price. I'm not sure if you can sell it to them as salvage. People I know strip and sell the good parts before they have it hauled away for scrap.
(or sell it to an individual that wants the parts)

Just like everything else, scrap prices are down although I did hear, that they had come up a bit recently but a vehicle, even one as big as a Suburban would only be worth a couple hundred dollars as scrap.Even places that will part them out usually only give you scrap price because they have the expense of parting them out and selling the pieces. There are 2 ways that you can make more than that on it,the first would be to part it out yourself but that only works out if you have the time and tools to do it even then, depending on zoning laws and such,it can be more trouble than it's worth.Someone else mentioned ebay but depending on your area, you might try Craigslist instead,it doesn't cost anything. If you set a price on it of $2000 or $2500 even with the bad trans, you can probably find someone interested that would either need it for parts or want to repair it themselves to drive or resell it.You could also try an auto auction but in some states, they are dealer only so unless you have a friend that is a licensed dealer that would be willing to take it for you, your SOOL.Some states do have public auto auctions,if your lucky enough to be in such a state and have away to get it there, that would be the easiest way.

Thats a 4l60E tranny I believe, the heavy duty master rebuild kit is only $135 and you can do it yourself. You can get a video that shows you step by step, would only take a couple of days. I built the tranny for my vette, first time ever touching one. I built it to be bullit proof with all the bells and whistles.
Beats the hell out of buying a new vehicle

I agree with SIXFOOTER. Your estimate sounds very high.Around here that kind of estimate would be from either a dealer ship or rip off garage.

If I didn't want to rebuild it myself I would look for a low milage wreck that had a trans that would fit and shop around for someone to put it in for me.
