Scratch or Crack

Hey folks,

I wanted to hear your opinion and make sure my grail knife (BM 551 154cm) has no crack in the blade. There is nothing at the thumbstud hole, neither at the pivot hole. I think it is a scratch, what do you think? Strong pro I think is that the line is interrupted.

Thanks a lot :)

Looks like a scratch to me...if it really is a crack, and it somehow breaks BM's warranty should cover it tho

Looks like a pretty superficial scratch to me. If I were you, I'd quickly wrap the knife in bubble wrap, put in small box, wrap that box in bubble wrap, box again, and store in the safest place in your home. Then hurry down to your nearest All-a-dollar and buy a new knife to use. :D

Kidding. Use it. Enjoy it. And be sure to put more scratches on it.

Yea, its scratched. It's not worth the time and money to send it back. Soon as you put it to use that little scratch you will not notice any more.

Has anyone ever seen a production knife develop a hairline crack through the thickest part of the blade?! I can imagine a lot of things happening to a knife, given enough punishment, but something would surely have to be very wrong with the metal mix for it to be as shattery as Gorilla glass!
(Shattery isn't a word apparently but whatever.)

Oh yeah - there are pictures showing thick blades cracking from the thumbstud.

I'd guess, if the blade finish is scratch resistant, then it's a crack. Otherwise, it's a scratch.
You can take a small sewing needle, run the tip with the grind lines to feel for a crack.

Thanks for your answers.

I tried the test with the ink, which did not sip. The applied drops stayed in circles on the scratch/crack.

J John_0917 : Do you have a picture of the ZT?

There is only shine when looking at the scratch/crack.

I can feel my nail catching very slightly wenn running over it, but I tried on other knives where the same happens.
