I am thinking of getting my LCC done with either ivory or ivory micarta scales. If I do I was thinking of getting them scrimshawed. Questions:
Can ivory micarta be scrimmed?
Will the scrimshaw hold up to daily carry?
Can it be done in color?
Can you reccomend an artist?
Any other info you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks folks,

What is this existential quandry all about anyway?

Hi Brian. Yes, ivory micarta can be scrimmed in b & w or color. No, scrimshaw doesnt hold up well as a daily carry. It is just a series of scratches or dots filled with ink and will eventually wear off if you carry, especially in your pocket. The knife will also get scratched up ruining the work.
There are alot of scrimshaw artists listed in the back of any of the Knives Annual books, look for one close to you. I can tell you that the work of Sandra Brady,Linda Karst,Denise Kondria, and Gaetan Beauchamp is excellent but they may have considerable backlogs. Also, I would guess that their work might cost much more than the LCC.
Hope this helps.

bteel, I had my daughter's Randall with white Micarta scrimmed by Kristen Barndt. She did a pink rose with green leaves and stem. Absolutely gorgeous! She is also very reasonable. Her price was half of the next lowest quote I got and a quarter of the highest! IMO her work was also superior to the other artists I got quotes from. She is located in Pennsylvania. I just tried the link and it didn't work. It was from her business card from two years ago. You might try this phone #610-381-4048

Thank you all for the responses. Due to price and durability issues, I will not be getting the scrimshaw at this time. Perhaps in the future if I decide to stop carrying the LCC daily (yeah right!)I may get it done then.
PS. Richard, thanks for the dragon!

Hi Brian , The durability of scrimshaw can be improved by using Reneisance Wax .
When the scrim is "worn out" it means that the oil , or ink , that is in the small dots and scratches are lost , not that the dots dissapears . By using a wax that hardens and creates a protective surface over the oil or ink , you can still have a beautiful scrim after several years of daily carry . Just make sure to take care of it in a proper way .
