I am thinking about purchasing a nice fixed blade knife with bone or white micarta scales. Then I would like to send it out to a scrimshaw "artist" and have a nice old fashioned mariner / whale design applied.

I do have a few questions, as this will be my first experience with scrimshaw.

a) Who would you advise that I contact about the scrimshaw artwork?

b) If I decide on white micarta, as a scale material, are there certain specific types of micarta that work better with scrimshaw art?

c) If you had a choice, would bone or micarta work better with scrimshaw art?

Here is a knife with beautiful Scrimshaw done by Linda Karst Stone.

The knife was made by Stan Fujusaka (Hawaii).

The scales are Mammoth Ivory.

I would definitely suggest some kind of natural material like Bone, Ivory etc and not Micarta.

In my opinion, to spend money on custom work by reputable scrimshander would not be justified on a synthetic material.

I hope this helps.

Sandra Brady does great work as well. If you want to see samples of many of the folk doing scrimshaw today, check out the last few issues of Knives Annuals and Digest. They each have sections with a bunch of pictures.

Hi jayharley!

A : Why not take a look at the work from scrimshander Viveca Sahlin at http://www.scrimart.u.se/ I have seen a couple of knives where she made the scrimshaw and it was very beautiful. Highly detailed and very accurate.

B: I would not like to have scrimshaw on synthetic materials. I´d use bone, horn or some other natural material.

Forumite "Richard Rosvall" used to do Scrimshaw. I have a couple of scrimmed dragon pendants. Very cool. I think he has a link in his sig line. Serach for his name here.
