My wife's friend showed me a picture of a shirtless Navy Seal preparing for battle that she found on google images. On his right hip is a Gerber sheath. Is it possible to identify his tool by the sheath?

I personally can't. I would suggest getting a date of the picture and checking on Gerber's website for tools that say "Credentials Required". It could be http://www.gerbergear.com/Military/Tools/MP600-ST_30-000513

My problem would be knowing if they can have their own tool vs. navy issue. Funny how they'd have a "made in china" tool in the Navy but I dont' want to start another one of those conversations

Not all Gerber products are made in China. I believe the one shown in the Seal pic is probably USA made.

Not sure if it is still true, and not that a tool is a uniform item, but all uniform items were required to be US made. I got into some trouble for wearing my Dr. Martens' while on duty because they weren't US made. A jealous b...h didn't like that my boots were shiner than his and sold me out after I told him how/why my boots looked so nice.

I would guess that any issued tool should have been US made, but really don't know anymore.

I accept your point. I have a tool I bought around 12 years ago that's USA made and it's still going strong. I'm just a little sore that some of the base models are not USA anymore. I wasn't trying to get a rise out of anyone at all.

You're probably both right. Not an easy "Made in USA" section on gerber's website so I just assumed they're all going china. I was at a sporting goods that had a bunch of gerbers that were all China. A tool is a tool and a good tool is a good tool wherever it comes from as long as the warranty is good and it gets it's use.

One caption I read in Time mag was that he was getting ready to go into Fallujah. My wife went to google images and typed in shirtless Navy Seal, and there he was.

great! we see it now :-)

unfortunately, the million dollar question remains unanswered at this point.

At one point in the late 90's the Army issued the Gerber Scout multi tool to some units. So I'm sure SEALS had them first, or at least first grab at them. I know the Navy and Army are two different branches but at one time the TL29 was issued to all branch units that had it in the units equipment.

Army, not Navy... I was issued two Gerber MP600s. I still have them, both marked "USA." There were also MP600s issued in tool boxes and Otis cleaning kits.
