Self Defense Belt

Does anyone know of any company that makes a belt that would be suitable for self defense? I'm not talking about belts that conceal a hidden edged weapon. I'm thinking more in terms of a belt buckle that could be swung around.

For those of you familiar with the martial arts, I'm wondering if something that could be used like the Japanese manrikigusari, manriki chain (basically a 37" chain with 2 weights at the end), or Chinese sectioned chain whip ( kind of sections of steel bar connected by short lengths of chain) is manufactured by any company. Sifu Y. C. Wong of San Francisco was famous for his expertise with this weapon. I actually trained with these weapons years ago, and got pretty good with them. A friend actually volunteered to let me hit him in the back of his leg to see how effective these weapons would be. Obviously, I didn't want to hurt my friend, so I hit him with maybe a 50% power swing. He went down, and basically didn't want to get up again!

I would think a Wilderniss Instructor belt would be good! It would hurt like /%¤#¤ to get hit with a buckle like that!

I think BladeRigger makes something like that, a nylon belt with a manriki chain variant within (cord with a titanium weight at the end, easy accessed). You might want to check out the BladeRigger site.

I have worn a nylon belt (cowboy style) for many years, with a round buckle made of braided stainless steel rods by a welder friend of mine (welded stainless steel buckle has survived much "field testing" and has never broken ) . I really found the mother lode when I found a beltmaker in Austrailia named George Taylor, his braided poly cord belts put the old ones I had to shame, I got a black one for my "fighting " buckle and a green and brown one for my hunting gear, and his braided kangaroo belts are awesome too. I have my buckles secured with two chicago screws. One of the nice features of his braided nylon belts is that they are started (braided) from one end of the belt instead of just being chopped off at both ends and a cheapo pot metal keeper on one end like all the old ones I had before. George's email is skt@netc.net.au, and he has a web site. A belt and buckle setup is very easy to use and effective for self defense. Even without a buckle, a belt can be used for many trapping and slapping techniques that have been practiced for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. Legal to carry too, I would stay away from any belt setup with a hidden knife or any feature that could indicate intent or purpose other than holding up your pants.

Here is the link for the BladeRigger "V-Gar™ System."

I think another Formite had one for sale a short while back. Might want to dig up the thread (use the Search feature) and see if it's still for sale. Best I remember, the price being asked was very reasonable.

I wear a Filson double thick belt. This belt would make a heck of a weapon if it ever came to that, but I like it cause it holds my pants up like no other belt I've ever had. www.filson.com should point you in the right direction.

Heh... This IS the Gadget forum, you know. I'm not going to be slinging any belts around for two reasons -

1) I have too much stuff on my belt that would fall on the ground

2) If I need to swing a belt around, what the hell happened to all those gadgets on the belt that are supposed to be used in this type of situation? Oh right, they're on the floor while I'm running around like a mad man swinging a belt buckle...

And if I may ask, who is holding back the baddies while you undo the buckle and remove your belt?

Nah, no ninja games for me. I'll just shoot 'em. Or maybe kick them in the nuts.

Expeditions Depot's Self Defense belt looks like it might fit the bill for what I had in mind. Bladerigger's V-Gar system looks really cool, too. However, while the Self Defense belt is basically just a belt with a heavy buckle, the V-Gar is basically a wire garotte with a titanium weight at the end. Although I'm sure you would be glad you had it if you were ever attacked, I would not wanted to be stopped by the authorities wearing one of these. Plus, the belt alone is almost $100.

Does anyone actually have any first hand experience with the Self Defense belt? Is it fast to deploy? Comfortable to wear? Would it be useful in a defensive situation?

A Leather / corded insert fitted into a linear pocket in your belt would work, wouldnt need to remove your belt. It would be quick to deploy, a removable part of the buckle could be used as the weight, or edged weapon to attach to the end of a insert.

Wait, what about self-defense suspenders? I may need to repel ninjas or something next time I'm at a dinner party.

During the 1970's, bikers used to take worn out triplex chains (the primary chain on a Harley) and get them chrome plated for belts in their jeans. Belt buckles would snap into the links, and the size was easily made by eliminating these links to proper fit.

It looked fancy, and for the untrained eye, quite harmless. In a pinch, it was several pounds of metal available for defense.

Sigh, I weighed 140 pounds at the time, and I doubt I could have gotten out of a chair wearing one! Worse yet, Madison is surrounded by lakes and I would sunk like a stone!
