Self defense knife throwing?

I was just wondering if anyone here carries throwing knives for self defense. Also if you do what knives you carry or if you did which ones you would choose.

You may not even get an answer to this question.

Even though it is nice to know in an emergency you could, it is important to consider this skill to be a sport. I would no more carry around throwers for defense than I would a sword. Both are fun, challenging, improve hand-eye coordination, take learned skill, always good challenge but poor substitutes for a gun and illegal to carry in most states. The only place I ever carry them is out hiking to throw from time to time when I get bored or the elusive dead tree rears its angry stump.

I don't but was just wondering if anyone did. Although I am not old enough to carry a firearm I rather would than throwing knives.

Throwing knives is a bad choice for self defense, why would you want to throw away your SD weapon?

I really don't think you'll get the answer you're looking for here, you would be better off carrying a cane or some type of impact weapon, if your far away enough that throwing a knife is an option, running away is another.

IBTM.

If you are too young to legally carry a gun I am sure you are also not legally able to carry throwers legally. In most states carrying them as a weapon of defense or offense is a felony at any age. There are a few enlightened states in which that is not the case, but I'm sure the age for a concealed deadly weapon would be the same for both. Folks that throw have a hard enough time explaining that throwing is a sport like darts or archery, horse shoes or batting cages. If folks thought we were viewing the bats as a viable method of concealed defense or offense, the batting cages would all close! I know, the bats will work for weapons. Shhhhhh don't tell anybody!

No, but if I did I would carry a bunch of them and they would be heavy.

Exactly!

I'd carry 2-3 Cold Steel Sure Balance 13-1/2", 18 oz. monster chunks of steel. That way if I hit with one in any way, shape or form, some part of the body will break. If I miss, I throw another. No matter what part of that type of knife hits the BG there would be damage. :D

But seriously, I wouldn't carry throwing knives for self defense...

Throwing knives for self defense? You'll wind up like Trejo in Desperado

I was trying out some fairly heavy screw drivers this afternoon on my inside throwing range. At one time I couldn't throw them. Now, no-spin they are devastating. I know some of these guys on here throw them. Might be a good choice. Certainly no one cares if you have them around.

Try throwing your knife into a rack of ribs and a roast bundled tightly together and drape some denim over it.

Let us know how it goes.

Consider this: throwing stars don't kill. They prevent attack by forcing someone to put up a guard. Small throwing knives aren't any better.

I was thinking about your post regarding efficacy of throwing in general. It is a fun hobby!! easy to carry the toys anywhere with you, cheap and fun to do. But if I was ever trying to use it for defense, It would have to be where I could not get to anything else. I would be very close, the nature of defense, and would throw the heaviest and sharpest things I could lay my hands on at close range, hard, at the face and throat. I would not expect great results. But I think it would send a message and significantly damage an attacker and of course would leave me with the last, sharpest and most useful hand to hand implement still in hand for close defense.

As Gregorio says "a bunch of them and they would be heavy."

There was a new video by Cold Steel where Lynn Thompson throws some blades at a dummy seated in a car. The axe looked pretty devastating!

I wouldn't recommend throwing you sd weapon at a bad guy. Worst case scenario is, that he picks it up and comes charging at you. Throwing knives at other persons are best left for the big screen.

IMO Throwing a knife at someone as a scare tactic alone should be enough to deter an attacker. Though you wouldn't find me hucking my only weapon at a hostile, unless I was armed to the teeth like Mr. Machete of course.:)

I am just wondering how on earth do they help in self defense except for stabbing someone with it ..the person who attacks u will be at a distance of a feet or 2 and by the time u draw you might be punched in the face .

Hey fill me in with the acronym meaning "IMO" and what is a "SD" weapon? Just ignorant I guess. I keep seeing these and have no idea. ;$

I carried around throwing knives when I was maybe 13. Not actually for self defense but more just because I could. If you've spent any amount of time actually throwing knives you'll know that you have to throw it just right to actually get it to stick. Sure it would hurt to get hit with one even if they didn't get stabbed but likely the bad guy would just get pissed off and use the conveniently located knife against you. If you want to use a knife for self defense you should probably get trained or at least use a knife meant for that. I say get a mini mag lite. Its useful and you can smack somebody in the head with the butt of it if you really need to.

IMO= In my opinion SD=Self Defense

self defense isnt always applicable to humans. the fully furred carnivores or reptilian scaled beast may also require
dispatch. i have seen vid of a student of pathfinder school who could connect with uncanny repetition with a hawk that
raised both my eye brows and bristled the hairs on my neck! lol i'm always reminded of David and Goliath, when at the age of
12, David was skilled enough with a sling shot that he could discourage the lion from messing with his sheep.Goliath
never had a chance.and its only a deadly weapon when its loaded, with a proper smoothed stone. i would think you could carry that around in your local mall around your neck without the P C police being awares!

Good point on the topic of slings. When I was a kid, this guy was giving away slings that he made. He used concrete eggs that he made, and this guy could launch them! Frighteningly accurate, and powerful. Now you've reminded me, I will have to go dig that thing out of a box somewhere.
