Several questions about the Marlin 1894 - 357 and ammo.

Hey Guys,

I have a Marlin 1894 357 rifle and have a question about ammunition. In the past I have hand loaded ammunition for hunting purposes, but I want to be able to buy factory ammunition also.

What is the best factory load for hunting?

Also, what would be the best factory load for self defense out of this rifle?

Thanks,

Geoff

I've always been fond of the 158 grain JHP, but recently I've been told I'm a dinosaur and should be looking at the 125grain JHP's instead.
there's also the new LeveRevolution ammo - with the pointed plastic tip for better ballistics and expansion - haven't tried it myself, but the hype sounds promising.

Federal Premium Personal Defense Ammunition .357 Remington Mag, Hydra-Shok Ammunition JHP, 130 GR, 1410 fps.
I had a few boxes ... used 'em on a Pumkin patch LOL

Hey Guys,

For wilderness survival I like the Marlin 1894 357/38

I've got a Marlin 336C 30-30; love that gun.

For hunting, I figure whatever factory ammunition shoots the most accurate in your gun should do fine. I know some people are picky about their ammo, but I can shoot anything in my 30-30 and hit what I'm looking at. For competition or in an auto, it'd be a different story, but how small of game are you hunting? :D

For self defense I'd recommend some Black Talons or Hydro-Shoks in .357mag.

works very well for hunting.. i use a .35 Remington lever action Marlin a lot when gun hunt (i bow hunt mainly)

Winchester Surpreme, Federal Premium useing Barnes bullets, Remington and a few more make 357 ammo for hunting. These are for deer. What are you hunting?

Hey Guys,

I should have been more specific about hunting. What load for medium game and what load for small game?

Thanks,

Geoff

Let me make this perfectly clear.......gun discussion belongs in Gadgets & Gear. There are several of your general gun thread sin W&SS and they do not belong here. You are asking several questions at once which warranted the move to G&G. Rephrasing your question and changing the title does not change that fact. If this was SPECIFICALLY a survival only question it would stay but it looks as though I have to merge threads now.

***Threads merged. Please refrain from starting another thread in W&SS.

When I had my Marlin, I picked up some of the Buffalo Bore 158gr .357 ammo for it. I never did get out hunting with it, but I'll tell you it did some damage to the 304SS plate I shot at.

It cratered the front where the round hit and bulged out the back of the plate - not thin stuff either, 1/2 thick 304SS. Seems like they'd do well on two or four legged creatures.

One thing I can wholeheartedly recommend to you is one of these:

I had this on my rifle and it was amazing. Accurate and quick sighting. Loved it.

+1 on Buffalo Bore, good stuff.

The Marlin won't cycle some classic Keith bullet loads. The Keith 173 grain #358429 is too long when seated to the correct crimp groove. Anything at, or under, the SAAMI maximum length of 1.590" should work perfectly.

The .357 in a rifle can be a real stomper with proper loads.
