I've been using the Shapton Glass Stone 500 for a few weeks now, and the more I use it, the more I like it. It cuts extremely fast and leaves a nice 500 grit finish. I've found a place for this stone in my routine as a single-stone solution for low-end kitchen cutlery up to German X50 steel. Now that I've gotten the hang of it, I can now take a dull factory Henckels or Wustoff from start to finish (edge-repair and reprofiling through to stropping) in 10 minutes with one stone, including stropping.

In this vid, I sharpen a Henckels with a dull factory edge on the Shapton GS 500 and finish with the HH Washboard (BR black compound on heavy copy paper).

Hey Mag, I just got a 1k Shapton, and love it. How is your stone wearing? How many knives have you run through it? Thanks for the info man. Josh

Hi Josh,

I've done probably 10 knives with it. It isn't dishing yet. It's definitely releasing abrasive; you can tell because the stone doesn't load. The swarf splashes right off. But it isn't mudding, either, at all. But then again, it's an easy stone to gouge, as well. Weird stone. Great stone. :D

Mine is dishing some already, I've done 3 knives on it, but quite a bit of work. Heavy folders that is. I agree totally, it is an amazing stone, it's worth the cost for sure.
