Sharpening a Benchmade Triage 9160SBK

I use a 9160SBK as my every day carry as its been a great knife for cutting seat belts (blade not hook, hook sucks as it) and prying into plastic pieces looking for dope.

It seems like benchmade has only sharpening a single side of this knife, one side is 15 degrees give or take and the other is flat at 90. I am new when it comes to re-beveling and pretty green on the Wicked Edge sharpener I have (although I've got a few hair widdling edges so far). Would I potentially ruin the blade by trying to get a 30 degree inclusive on this blade? or should I stick to how it was originally sharpening and just clear the burr every few strokes?

Thanks for the help,

I have yet to see one in person but knowing how BM sharpens I wouldn't be surprised if it was a "oops, well, that should still work" type of sharpening.

Unless the blade grind is supportive of the edge grind then I would just sharpen to 15 per side like it should be.

Speculating, and maybe I'm wrong, but...

I get the impression the edge is supposed to be a chisel-grind, or what BM has named (confusingly???) "Opposing Bevel" blade style. If it appears it's sharpened on only one side, that would fit the chisel-grind description. Can't find a detailed description on BM's own site defining what 'opposing bevel' means, but have seen a review of the knife on another forum describing it as a chisel-grind.

Yea, its 100% only sharpened on one side....

Thanks though, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't end up ruining the blade by putting a 15 on the non-sharpened side!

Appreciate it!

I don't see it being ruined in doing so. I'm still sort of scratching my head over what BM is doing(?) with these, as some of the vids/reviews I'm looking at for these 'opposing bevel' blades seem to show/hint that there may be bevels on both sides, and some others seem to suggest otherwise. If anything, it may be worth asking them directly what the edge is supposed to look like on your knife. Might not make any difference, if you're planning to do a standard symmetrical grind anyway; but it'd personally drive me nuts not knowing what it was supposed to be from the factory.

Yea there may be a bevel (extremely low) on the right side, but it honestly FEELS in my hand / finger, 90 degrees. Its 100% not even on both sides... here is a photo so we're all on the same page. I tried taking a photo of the edge from the front, but I can't get the camera to focus correctly, its the best I could come up with!

Sorry its not as nice as other peoples, its been through a lot! Lots of door panels / air bag panels looking for dope!

I use this every day and just looking to put a simple 30 degree on it so I can maintain it without having to send it for BM every few weeks and being without for a week or two! I use this knife every day and cut everything from seat belts, plastic to evidence bags... just looking to get a decent edge and I can maintain!

Yep. They sharpened it Emerson style. It works on that blade. They cut weird, but super easy to sharpen. You can keep it or go symmetrical, but id recommend giving that a shot for awhile. You may like it.

Let us know.

Genhawk, just wondering if you're federal or local and what part of the country you're in

There is a drastic change in the blade grind on the non-beveled side which is the reason for the chisel grind. I would NOT recommend changing its grind.

Sharpen the bevel side at 20 and the backside 10, on the backside use medium and fine grits, no coarse grits.

Really appreciate it Jason... I've only had a good 10ish blades under the Wicked Edge, but I will 100% follow you advice! I'll keep it like you said as the blade itself is "torxed" to an extent so you can put some good leverage on it without bending the blade!

I'll give the 20/10 a whirl here in a few days when I get off assignment and let you know how it goes!
