sharpening a vegetable/fruit peeler?

Sounds pretty dumb...

We have used a nice vegetable/fruit peeler by OXO for a good number of years. It's gotten pretty dull and is planing instead of cutting.

Is there a way to sharpen these things instead of just chucking it? It feels a little wasteful to do that. I've tried steeling and it helps a bit, but it's now at the point that steeling doesn't do much anymore.

I figure I can just put it down on a stone and hone away, but you can't exactly deburr.

Any tips?

Thanks.

get a spyderco triangle stone... they sell spares for the 204 if you don't wnt to be out a lot. Should be around $8-10usd for a pair.

Run it down the length on both sides, the corner fits in nicely. I also sharpen nail clippers like that.

Ah ha...

Ok, something else to get. :)

I'm not sure I get how you use it though... you stick the corner of one of the length of the stones into the space between the two blades?

VampyreWolf beat me to it! with exactly the advice I would have given you. In fact, I revived four old peelers when I first got my Sharpmaker. VERY quick and easy.

Stroke the stone across the flat front of the blades several times. Then insert the edge between them for a couple of quick, light strokes to break off any wire edge. Then a couple more strokes on the flat.

Here are the Spyderco sharpeners. If you haven't gotten a sharpmaker yet, this is a good excuse to go for it. But check out the Ceramic File Set also. I got a Double Stuff myself, but it's not the best for tiny items like peelers.

Got it.

Sweet... thanks, guys. :)

Esav, I think I'll go for the individual stones... I use an EdgePro for my knives and it's done everything I've needed so far... although it is pretty useless on peelers, I'll have to admit. ;)

Thanks!!

ErikD has a good point - just use a knife! :)

Actually, the 204 would make a good kitchen addition - those serrated knives, clippers, peelers, scissors - I've even touched up pizza cutters.

You can never have too many knives, or ways to sharpen them! My father (the MASTER of the arkansas stone) recently bought a diamond stone, this is either a sign that one needs more than one sharpening system...or of the apocalypse.

A good paring knife and a little practice will skin that spud in record time, faster than a peeler when you get used to it.

A paring knife???

I use a puukko or my CRK Sable III or a Camillus Maxx bowie. :) The Maxx is probably the best all-around kitchen knife I've ever found.

This is Mrs. Biogon we're talking about.

Puukko == removed digits
Paring knife == cut to the bone
Peeler == Happy dinner for Biogon
