I've been collecting knives for a few years now and I need to start sharpening on my own, so I need a recommendation on a nice stone that doesn't bust the bank.

What blade steel are your knives? I suspect you just want a working edge?

I like using King K80 waterstones for general sharpening. 250/1000 puts good working edges on most of my knives. Harder steels will take longer, and for some high carbide steels this stone will have a tough time cutting. For those I use diamond plates.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks. :D

An Arctic Fox stone would be a good general-purpose option. :)

for starting out , I recommend a 3 stone set.
Naniwa Professional 400
Imanishi Bester 1200
Suehiro Rika 5K

John at Japanese Knife Imports has some good videos on sharpening .

Diamond hones last practically forever (3 decades for my DMTs and still going) and will work on any steel, particularly the high carbide content powder steels.
