So far I’ve practiced on probably 15 old beat up Knives who’s blades have it been in fairly good shape I’m trying to sharpen the blades and I have yet to not scratch with just one scratch every plate. I tried to sharpen as careful as I am I always put a mark on the blade of some sort. Is there any way to do this? It seems almost impossible. I have used Whetstones. I’ve used him shirt by design I have used just about every way there is to sharpen a knife, diamond sided or whatever but I just can’t find a way not to scratch or put a scratches even a small scratch on a knife and that ruins it if it’s a knife, you want to sell it some point, any advice it would be much appreciated. I’ve found that this is a very knowledgeable audience. Thanks.

How are you scratching the blades? I don't see how you can unless you're sharpening at a *very* low angle!

When starting out free hand sharpening, would suggest that you reduce your speed, slow and precise is the way to go until you learn consistency of angle and develop muscle memory.
If you have been watching videos of sharpening techniques, these guys go quick, they have normally had many years of experience.
You can also try running a flattening stone or plate at a 45 degree angle on all four edges of your stone, this just removes any lip on the edge and prevents scratching if your blade is slightly off the flat surface. It is normaly the edge of the stone that will bite in and put scratches on your blade.

Watch this video.

See the part, early on, where he has you grip the blade, three fingers around the handle, then a pinch grip, then you extend your forefinger along the spine? Then three fingers pressed right up along the edge? That's engineering applied to the human body. It is nearly impossible to dip low enough to scratch anything, when you are arranged that way. And yes, it works as well for small folders as it works for kitchen knives.
