A couple of weeks ago I posted a question on the forums. I was in need of someone to create a custom kydex/concealex sheath for a Greco Companion. Jerry Hossom suggested that I contact Matt Draper, and even offered to pay for the sheath in order to get Matt's work better known.

After a couple of emails traded between Matt and myself I shipped the knife off to him. Upon receiving the knife and talking with me further Matt made a couple of suggestions. I went with Matt's suggestions, and am I ever glad that I did!

The black sheath that Matt made for my Companion is truly a work of inspiration! It is without a doubt the best fitting, most usable sheath I have ever seen. The material has been fitted around the knife perfectly, with no wasted space or excess flourishes. The knife slides out of and into the sheath very smoothly, with no catches or hitches, and rides there quietly without any play or noise.

I had a couple of requirements and Matt certainly exceeded my expectations. I wanted a sheath the could be worn in several positions, and Matt really came through. This particular sheath can be worn IWB, horizontal, or canted forward on either side.

Matt's talent lays in the simplicity of his designs. If you need a custom kydex/concealex sheath for one of your knives you owe it to yourself to talk with Matt! You will not regret it!

Matt has several qualities that I truly admire and respect, and that will see me doing more business with him in the future:
  • he is very professional and a gentleman of the first order
  • his workmanship is outstanding
  • it is a pleasure talking with him and listening to his ideas and inspirations
  • did I mention he does exceptional work?

This has been a really wonderful experience for me, as I have never had a custom sheath made before. I can recommend Matt and his work highly... he reminds me a lot of Rob Simonich in his attention to detail and his customer service, and higher praise for anyone if the knife industry I cannot imagine.

Thank you, Matt. And thank you, Jerry, for putting me in touch with Matt! You guys are part of the reason BladeFourms is the magnet that draws us knife nuts together!

I just love it when I can say, "I told you so." I'm glad you liked Matt's work, Alan. His is the only kydex/concealex I put around my knives. What I find impressive, in addition to all those things you've listed, is that they look and feel just like leather.

Way to go Matt!

I was fortunate enough to spend several hours yesterday watching Matt transform a sheet of Concealex into a custom horizontal carry sheath made to my exact specifications - hand-fitted to my knife and my belt! I can testify from first-hand observation that Matt is a true artisan/craftsman of the first order. I think his minimalist approach to the design of Concealex sheaths is absolutely state-of the-art, and results in a sheath that is both aesthetically pleasing and supremely functional.

How does one get ahold of Matt?

Matt's email address is

Drop him a line and let him know what you're interested in. He's a great guy just to talk knives with, and he'll work with you to create the right sheath for your knife and style of carry.

Dennis,

Berkley's right... Matt will work with you to creat JUST the right sheath for you. I can't say enough good things about Matt AND his work.

Matt is going to make the sheaths for the Hossom knives I ordered, and after reading these glowing comments, I can hardly wait! Perspiration is dotting my forehead, and my heart is racing...hard to breathe...vision blurry...

Whew! Almost lost it there. I hate these 'can't wait for my knife' attacks.

Waxy's sheaths KICK A**!!!

Matt,

Are the sheaths on your page laminated? Or is the concealex finish just shiny?

Ronald, since Matt isn't here and I am, I will answer for him. His sheaths are not laminated; they are coated with a material that is a flat black and leathery to the touch. One of the things I like about Matt's sheaths is they don't look and feel like plastic.

Waxy,

I figured it would be a pain in the butt to make! You did an INCREDIBLE job! Fits like a glove

Attila,

It was a pain, but well worth it in the end. Now that I know how best to approach them, the next one will be easier to make. In fact, somebody e-mailed me today and he's considering having me make an SB3 sheath for him to take to the Riddle of Steel in May! (Thanks in part to you, I appreciate it).

I am also having my two Hossom's sheathed by Matt and I am really looking forward to gettting my grubby little hands on that finished package...Hopefully I'll get the knives within a month or so...Sigh, the waiting, the waiting.
Which reminds me, Matt, We need to talk when the knives are finished, so we can work out how the sheaths should be made...Should I call you or do you want to call me?
Email me and we'll exchange phone numbers if you want.
Not much longer now...Sigh
