I'm loving the look of the new sheepfoot boy's knives/barlows. However, my 55 Houndtooth has sort of converted me to the single blade slip joint. Much more pocket friendly. The wharncliffe on my 55 still gives me a point to use if needed. I have found sheepfoot blades to be extremely handy, but have never carried one alone without another blade with some sort of tip.

Has anyone ever EDC'd a sheepfoot only? Your thoughts on their suitability as a stand alone EDC blade?

Much appreciated.

In the meantime, I'm going to keep staring at these new barlows....

I've regularly carried single Sheepsfoot, Lambsfoot, and Wharncliffe patterns, and find them fine for just about everything. I quite like having a small pen blade, but it's by no means essential. These styles are surprisingly versatile. For hunting, I'd personally think thir lack of belly might be a disadvantage when gutting an animal, but I know people who hunt regularly with only these patterns and seem to manage just fine.

I don't mind a sheepsfoot on a pattern like the stockman where there are alternative blade shapes available. But for single blades give me a wharncliffe. Same straight cutting edge, but with a usable point. The wharncliffe already sacrifices belly in its design and I have no desire to also go without an effective tip.

I find they work fine for most cutting tasks. A belly is important for some cutting chores, but a flat edge makes a great slicer.

Yes... I EDC a sheepfoot blade from time to time and I really like this blade style.

Otter with camel bone handles ;)

I regularly carry Congress or Half-Congress patterns and find that the sheepsfoot main blade handles my usual chores without a problem. Although, with those patterns, I have at least one secondary blade to fall back on if the sheepsfoot is not suitable.

I often gravitate toward single-blade versions of patterns, but I've been going back and forth and whether I would purchase a sheepsfoot Charlow in single blade, or get it with the additional pen blade. Sheepsfoot blades are a lot more useful than one might assume if you haven't used them much, but having a second blade with a point makes for a more versatile combo, imo.

Speaking of sheepsfoot blades, I've been lusting after one of these for a while. I can imagine all sorts of uses for a big, fixed blade sheepsfoot:

Nice fixed-blade  I agree the Sheepsfoot is a lot more versatile than most people thing. Even more versatile in my opinion, is the Lambsfoot ;)

The only closed-knife-pic I could find, but I´ll get another one for you, if you want. No problem.
