Sheepsfoot vs coping blade. What's the difference?

I am wondering what the difference is between these two blades? Is it the same blade just a different name? My impression is that the coping blade is a small sheepsfoot blade. I am sure there's more to the story.

Please educate on this subject.

Thank you,
Curtis

Well, the difference is the point. The coping has a fine point for detail work while the sheepsfoot is rounded at the top and the point is not quite as fine as the angle at the point is a little wider.... the sheepsfoot is also a little stronger due to the way the angles are.

Someone may correct me, but that's how I see it.

Coping blades are slightly better for small detail whittling or carving. Sheeps foot blades are strong pull cutting blades.
My two favourite using blades.

Robin

I have always looked at it this way. The coping blade is to the sheepsfoot as a pen is to the spear. Smaller, thinner thus allowing finer work. Just my take on it.

Good thread and question. I've wondered about this as well. Great pic Primble, thanks!

Bingo, the Sheepfoot is just a large Coping blade. The coping is smaller/thinner and meant for finer work. The Sheepfoot is beefier and more sturdy for heavier work.

That's been the way I've always looked at it as well Jeff:thumbup:
