I have a friend in Italy that I'd like to gift a custom knife to. Can someone point me toward any regulation/restriction documentation for shipping blades internationally?

Thanks

I've had no trouble using USPS to ship knives to Australia, Japan, or most of Europe. I don't have any documentation for you though regarding restrictions. I would just make sure you have insurance on it if it is valuable.

No probs here either. I've shipped to France, the UK, Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, Japan, Thailand..all got their knives (I hope I didn't just jinx myself). But I did insure for the full value each time, and it gets expensive. I just labeled the package contents as "cutlery".

I've sent knives internationally no problems. I've been requested by recipients to declare them either cutlery, cutting tools, or just tools.

Most important ime: declare them as something unspecific like "cutlery" or "tools" ... "where there is temptation there is sin..." ;)

I've had a couple successes shipping to Europe (Norway and Netherlands). I have also used "tool" on the declaration form.

"Tools" would be the way to go in EU as anything slightly "cutting" raises Yikes!!! and Shrieks!!! Don't forget that any expedition from US to EU, and reverse, is submitted to custom taxes... 30 % in France. Did you say "Yikes" ?

I´m a german, we have strict weapon law in general.

I was the reciever as well as the sender to knives all over the world. Never had a problem - at least as long as the truth is written on the custom declaration.

I recieved knives when there was written "pocket tool" "Knife" or "pocket knife". The taxes had to be paid, which were 19 % of the value. When the sending is over 23.00 € - there were extra 8 % on taxes to pay... Alright so far...

Had bad experience shipping to Australia, lost $200.00 knife, sent certified with minimal insurance thinking it would be okay having received lots of stuff from England and Philippines,Italy....never got there ,never again for me.

Your question is far too broad and vague for any chance of obtaining an accurate answer. There are a million different scenarios, how can anyone answer?

If you search, this topic has been covered in depth already, several times:

As I live in Europe I've had very good experience with parcels from the US. That said, three are taking a long time at the moment but at this time of year you must expect it. Pocket knife, camping tool, tool are all fine to use as contents, the only prohibited knives here are flick/auto knives.

Remember i have to pay import tax on not just the item but the damn postal charge too! So I have to look at dealers offering a fair shipping price, some really like to charge extra even without insurance, nor do they include the domestic cost as part of the total either... I pass on those, it's called rip-off.
