Does any one have any experience shipping Knives to New Zeland? Is there anything I should be aware of?

Hi There
If you are sending knives doen here there are afew thinds to be aware of
No double edged blades
No autos, balis or gravity knives
No bayonets
Airmail takes up three weeksfrom the US, Global priority up to seven days
usual problems with unprocessed wood and animal products. The Fish and
Ag inspectors have no sense of humour.
Hope this helps.

I would be shipping a Razel, like my avitar. Would that be considered a double edge? I can't ship a double edge knife or it is illegal for them to carry?

Josh, I e-mailed Emanuel to check out this thread. He's down there, too, and may have an idea if it's legal.

It's really a lot like a tanto, just with a vertical forward edge. What a shame if they cut themselves off from a great design! :D

Thanks Esav, He said he didn't think it would be a problem, but was going to check with customs and get back with me. He has a 6 month wait anyway, I am sure between the help on Blade Forums and him checking with customs we will get it figured out before then.

I'm glad I got a razel before everyone else put in their orders! (You're going to have a wild time at the Blade Show!)

Hi There
as far as I know double edge means just that, however I have several bowies with shap clippoints thatwere not a problem. The prohibition is on the import of double edged blades. The local makers will always make up what you want. Posession is judged by your intent, so in some siuation aSAK could be a problem, in others a sword is OK. As usual cities are more of a problem than rural area. Good luck.

PS Vague but truthful description on the customs paperwork helps. Avoidrefernce to combat, martial, military custom made etc if possible.

I unfortunately also live in the knife-less NZ and have to resort to the US for some good production blades. Customs are indeed quite strict on the double edge, although they don't seem to mind a false edge too much.

I agree about the description. Truthful but vague works well. Put something like "Tools" on the description. A knife is technically a tool isn't it?

Normal US airmail works well. The postal system here is extremely reliable and the package should find its way to the lucky recipient within about 10 days or so.

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks for the info guys, this guy says he is rural. In Whataroa, and that I have to send it some one else in another town just to get it to him. I think we will be able to work it out. Whataroa, New Zealand, MAN that is a long way from Cleveland, TN. I am going to get a map out and find that place. Isn't the internet a  thing. Anyway guys thanks for the help, if you come up with anything else, please let me know.

Seems the Kiwis already said everything important.
As Greg said, say it's a tool and you'll be fine.
You can bring in knives, that's not a probelm.
I know that Becker knife with a similar shape blade as your Razel got through, because I saw it for sale, so I don't see any problems.

But still, it's good your client is checking with customs to make sure.

Good luck.

Hey Phil,

I'm not too far away from you. I stay up in Whangarei.

I'm not too focussed when it comes to acquiring knives. I have a severe case of shiny knife disease. I pretty much buy what catches my interest at the time.

I got the Gunting system about 3 months ago and have become very interested in MBC lately, but opportunities in NZ are non existent it seems. So just have to be happy with the DVDs for now...

I have just ordered myself a CS Master Hunter in Carbon V and a CS Magnum Tanto in San Mai. Expecting them in the next two weeks or do.....

What are you into?

Cheers,

Greg

Hey Josh - what do you mean "Whataroa is a long way from Cleveland"? It is more a case of Cleveland being a long way from Whataroa. ;)

I live in NZ and I don't even know where Whataroa is....

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg
I'm into just about anything sharp. Bought a Magnum Tanto when they first came out, it looks a bit different now. Just recieved a Laredo bowie to go with my Bagwell Hells Belles(Ontario made). Also have some kukhris, swords etc. We are not that badly off for custom makers though Bill Reddiex, Richard van Dyke and a few others. There is a knife show in Auckland in June- July, will post the dates when I get home.

Phil

Ahh the good old kiwis are here and in full strength - all four of us! :)

That knfe should be no problem - looks more like a chisel to me with an edge on the other side. A "woodworking" tool for customs declarations purposes.

I would suggest sending it via Registered Insured Air Mail - costs a few $$ more, but it significantly reduces the chnaces of it going "astray".

Customs have been opening ALL my packages lately containing knives, but didn't bother with my collapsable batons! :)

Howdy all you Kiwis!

I have an obliquely related question and since this thread seems to have collected all the Kiwis together, it seems like the place to ask it.

I will be visiting Enzed this fall. Just to make things interesting, my wife and I are taking on the challenge of flying with carry-ons only. That means no sharps. However, since we'll be doing a fair bit of day-hiking, I'd really like to have some type of blade with me. If the flight weren't an issue, I'd normally take along my mini-Griptilian and Monochrome...possibly also my Leatherman Wave.

I'm not sure how I would accomplish shipping a knife or two to myself there (I think the timing would be tough to get right), so I was thinking I would buy something there. Then I could ship it either to Sydney (where we are going afterwards for the bulk of our trip) or back home, where the arrival time isn't critical.

So: where should I shop for a nice, functional, not-too-expensive folder in Auckland (our arrival point)? Probably one of the locking SAKs is about the right speed for this purpose.

What say you?

thanks for the input,
vv

Here's a good one. These guys definetely have the locking blade SAK you want because I'm right here looking at their brochure!!

"Hunting and Fishing" New Zealand:
197B Great South Road, Takanini, Auckland. (Takanini is in South Auckland, but it's easy to get there with the bus)
Ph: 09 298 1556

Vic Hunter for 59.95 NZ dollars.

They also have the Gerber Gaitor folder in ats-34 for 159.95

I hope the prices are current since my brochure is from last year. I wonder when they'll send me the new one.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Also, check these guys out. They've got some really interesting folders for what I think are pretty good prices.

And lastly, you can always go to the 'House of Knives':
24 Mt Eden Road
Auckland

Have fun in New Zealand!

Emanuel has you pretty much covered - if you hit the main street in the city (Queen St in Auckland) there's the three main sporting / outdoors shops that sell SAKs.

Prices for SAKs are reasonable compared to prices in the USA - buying a BM Griptilian will cost you over $USD100 tho!

If you're looking for something a little unique, try the Victorinox Outrider, a locking SAK with scissors, philips driver and wood saw - this model is not usually available in the USA! http://www.victorinox.ch/newsite/en/produkte/index.htm

Then if you are going to have to ditch the knife when you hit the plane just get an Opinel - around $USD10.

Thanks guys! I'll print out that info right now to take with me. All of those shops look like they would be interesting to check out just on their own merits.

The Opinel is a brilliant suggestion (I've been wanting one anyway).

I also like the idea of a knife that would be rare or impossible to find here. Do you know of any others in that category besides the Outrider?

thanks for your help!
