Hey Blade,

I have been looking at the UTX-85 for at least a year now. I keep picking my favorite one and watching it sell out. I have almost purchased one numerous times just to miss out.

Who owns (or owned) a UTX-85? What are your long term thoughts?

The reason I'm making such a big deal and not just buying one is my most expensive knife is $120. $225 is quite a jump.

I don't have a UTX-85, but I've been looking at them for awhile too, I do like the smaller size. I have an Ultratech and I've had it for over 5 years without any issues.
IMO opinion if you want an OTF, Microtech is the way to go and the UTX-85 is not too expensive for an OTF.

My advice is to buy one from a reputable dealer. I got my Ultratech from the Hollow Grind ( he's a BF sponsor). There's two reasons, first there's tons of counterfeits out there and secondly the HG has a reputation for good service , if you ever need warranty work.

I don't think anyone is going to give you a better OTF for the money.

With that said, a lot of people aren't fans of Tony Marfione, and it's not hard to see why if you do a little research. If his character puts you off, then don't buy his stuff. Otherwise, go for it.

I'd suggest looking into the Guardian Tactical Recon, they released it this year and IMO it's better than Microtechs in the same price range. I went swimming with my Recon on Sunday and all I did was shake the water out of it and it's fine. I'm carrying it today and flushed it with naphtha this morning, no rust, no gritty action, still reliable.

I've owned a few MTs and handled a ton of them. I personally know a few people who own and use them too. Good knives, but I can see how people could be turned away by Tony.

I forgot about those. You're right, they look excellent. It looks like an ultratech with some minor updates and actual screws.

Hard to beat Microtech heat-treated M390, but I bet the CPM-154 in the Recons is quite good.

By far the Ultratech fits my medium hands better than the 85, but I have and will keep both for the rest of my life.

IMO, you'll get a lot of distain to the company, but I see it differently, and support MT.

It's actually more around the size of a Scarab and has some major upgrades. My Recon hasn't left my pocket much since Bladeshow, I carry it almost everyday.

GTs CPM154 is good too, I have a couple knives from them. I would honestly prefer 154 style steel over Elmax or M390, but that's just me.

Had one and sold it. Didn't care for the inherent blade play of the UTX-85 or the all-to0-apparent vertical machined grind lines on the satin blade. Nice carry size, though. Deployed with a satisfying "Clack!" Personally, autos end up boring me since they basically open themselves. They're easy to sell on the Exchange, so there's that.

No; because it's a Microtech.
IMO they do not value their customers as evidenced by CS attitudes and performance ... or lack thereof.

Jerkwad not with standing, buy it if youve lusted after it this long. If you dont like it, it will sell on the exchange without losing a bunch of money on it.

I had one, liked it, but ultimately didn't get a lot of use out it. It was well made.

If you like it, buy it. If not, don't.

It's too small for my taste.

I'd buy a knife from Satin if I liked the design. A little like shopping in Wal-Mart I guess.

I think MT makes excellent knives. I have had a few. That said, I don’t have any currently because I think I can do better for the money. I have never purchased an OTF because something more like a PM2 is likely a more capable knife.

I think a utx70 is a seriously expensive letter opener. The 85 with the contoured scales is a perfect edc that is not to big or not too small. That being said, microtechs are overpriced and I would not pay retail.

Now I have to ask, what does, “design-thieving blogger-suing certified jerkwads” mean? Just curious.

Yeah, they are way overpriced. I paid $500 freaking dollars for a CF Hellhound Ultratech that had problems out of the box. I serviced the knife myself and now it runs like a champ. But seriously, $500 F'n dollars? I could get a lotta knife for that kinda coin, but nobody else makes an OTF with that same aesthetic so I was stuck paying $500 freaking dollars:mad::D

The whole "Theiving-Jerkwad" thing refers to Tony Marfione and his shenanigans in the past. He's a bit of a drama queen, but the same can be said about many others in the knife industry.

Comme ci, comme ça...
