Should I buy Hinderer with CPM-20CV or CPM-S45VN

Hi folks, please help me with latest Hinderer batches and deciding which steel to take. I have checked forums posts and there are mentions that CPM-20CV is kinda soft on XM 18.

What about CPM-S45VN?

Do you have any real experience?

I was prescribed a medicine that for some unknown reason comes in only a 25MG tablet. The Doctor said take half of it daily.

I use my SHF that has CPM S45VN or Hinderer XM-24 that has CPM20CV to cut a tablet in half. Either works fine. Sure, this is light duty. And quite meaningful.

I think you'll be fine with either choice.

S45VN has been much less chip prone in my experience, easier ( faster ) to sharpen and no noticeable differences in edge retention for my uses.

Hinderer 20CV seems better than their M390 ( yes - basically the same steel ). Holds an edge decently once you actually get an edge on the knife.. chippy though ( zip ties and unseen staples ).

Why don’t Hinderer’s come sharp from the factory ? I’ve lost count of the XM18’s I’ve had - none came sharp.. kind of ridiculous for the price you pay.

I find the edge retention on 20CV is going to make the edge last about 20% longer than the S45VN, and the 20CV is also more rust resistant; But the S45VN is going to be a bit tougher and less chippy, while easier to sharpen than 20CV.

I think the charts have shown that S45VN and Magnacut at 61-62 Rockwell will have very similar edge retention, which is great but not as good as 20CV; but the Magnacut is noticeably more tough and rust resistant than S45VN or 20CV.

I have gotten chips in my Hinderer 20CV blade that needed to be sharpened out, but neither of my user S45VN Hiunderer have chipped yet; and they strop back to hair popping sharp with just a little work. So I'm staying with S45VN and Magnacut from them.

Thank you guys, much appreciate it. I will stick to CPM-S45VN then. I have Edge Pro Apex 4 with custom grit stones ranging from 120 grit to 6000 grit but use them very rarely last decade. Getting thicker, lazier and older I guess. On the contrary my Tri-Angle Sharpmaker sees a lot of use :) Hopefully S45VN will like my Tri-Angle ceramic stones :)

If you set the angle of your choosing with the edge pro - the Sharp maker will work well to keep a sharp edge sharp. I use my sharp maker on S45VN often - works great.

I carried a 3.5" Skinny Sheepsfoot in 20CV for a while, from light duty food prep to stripping wire and cutting bicycle shifter cable (real tough stuff) it has seen it all. And I can't tell the difference from any other 20CV/M390 knife I have. My other most carried knife is a CRK Inkosi in S35VN same tasks still performed really well, if S45VN is a slight upgrade over S35VN I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I don't see what the fuss about 1-2 HRC is, HRC isn't everything.

When cutting lines for crab pots s35vn and s45 vn the edge rolls. Magnacut not so much. S90v I can cut lines all day and just strope it for the next day.

This 100%.

Yes!!!!!! Someone finally said it. Why don’t they come sharp from the factory. I bet they would be much more popular(if that’s possible) and sought after if they were actually sharp from the factory. I’ve owned around 20 Hinderers and NONE of them come shave hair/slice paper like any of my $150-$200 Spydercos. Get your act together Rick, lol. And I do still own about 15 Hinderers bc they I do love them in general.

The only caveat to this being if you've got some of the older Hinderer 20CV. Ive got a couple from ~9-10 years ago and I'm 99% sure they're softer than current HT by a couple points maybe. No issues with chipping but edge holding on par with S35VN from CRK.

All three Hinderers of mine were shaving sharp. They appear to be sharpened at 20 degrees and they're noticeably thicker behind the edge than Spyderco that aim for 15 degrees. That could make an edge appear "dull", I'll admit they didn't cut that well until reprofiled them and took the edge back. I've had way worse edges on CRK.

Yeah, but all of my Hinderer knives are more recent.

Most of my Hinderers are 20CV and I like how they do this steel. Might be the geometry playing a factor, but I’ve never had problems with chipping with them, unlike super steels from other brands…
(Cutting mostly cardboard, and plastic, the occasional zip tie, etc)
