International Cryogenics liquid nitrogen storage dewar (NEW)

I hardly post threads on here but I've been feeling pretty ignorant and helpless lately. :D

I already had another thread up about dewars but it was non-specific. I found one, which I think looks like a real good deal, but I needed to get your guys' opinion on it.

The problem is I have to decide whether I want it by tomorrow afternoon.

It's $722 from Amazon new so I would think paying $315 for a new one would be good, right? I guess his company won it at an auction as part of a larger "lot." It's brand new, they just don't have any use for it.

I'm sure on the exterior dimensions but I wonder how big the inside is... The reason I ask is because I've seen some dewars that have a bunch of interior insulation that makes the inside a lot different(smaller) than the exterior would visually indicate. If it's 23in tall, I should be able to do 15in blade at least, right?

Here at the specs:

international cryogenics liquid nitrogen storage dewar

Capacity 10 liters
Static hold time 62 days
Evaporation rate 0.16 liters/day
Neck tube diameter (ID) 2.25" (57mm)
Outside diameter 11.25" (286mm)
Overall height 23.00" (584mm)
Empty weight 12lbs/5.5kg
Full weight 33lbs/15kg

Here's an Amazon link to the one I'm looking at.

Sorry for clogging things up on here with multiple threads here gents. I just need to try and figure this out by tonight. I'd greatly appreciate the help, as always. Cheers!

I looked on their website and they don't list the internal height of their dewars. Kind of frustrating.

I found a cutaway illustration of their dewar's internals(see below). It looks like the insulation on the bottom takes up about 1/6th of the height. With an external height of 23 inches I think I'll still have enough room for 15"-16" knives. What do you guys think?

Are dewars able to be filled up into the neck? I know that they probably hold the LN longer if the cap is all the way on but if I need to cryo a longer knife, and was limited by the height taken up by the bottom, I could just get it filled up into the neck and barely close the lid... Any ideas?

Just an FYI - You don't exactly "close the lid" on a Dewar. It just sits over the hole. An overfilled Dewar also may slop around in transport ... not exactly a good thing.

If the blade is too long to go in fully, just give it an hour on the point end, then reverse it for an hour on the tang end.

I have trouble getting blades that length in a full sized dewar. Remember that lid goes down into the neck four or five inches and it will loose a lot liquid nitrogen without it.

If I were you I'd find a 30 liter wide mouth dewar, they can be had for what you're spending.

i had a small mouth 10 and it woulded well till i started making more wide blades
it was used and i got a few years out of it before it had a vacuum fail and no longer hold the LN
ended up getting a 20l big mouth and i love it

They always fill mine until it overflows. No issues with filling to the top.

Neck mouth hole seems small

If you're hanging from a wire by a hole that is not perfectly balanced on center, it doesn't hang straight

It makes fishing harder.

Thanks a bunch guys, I really appreciate the input.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on it. It turns out my friend's brother had two of them and I was able to get one of them today here(the other one is already sold).

I measure the height from the brim of the mouth to where the tape measure bottomed out and it read 21.5 inches. Not too bad. The only bad thing is the cap/plug takes up 7.75 inches of that. :/

That still leaves me a substantial amount of room for normal sized blades and the occasional longer blade(with the cap off or partially on. I was thinking about buying an extra lid/plug for it and cutting the Styrofoam back so I would have a setup for longer blades. I don't think it'd be a good idea to do to the one that came with it as it'd probably reduce it's efficiency.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate it!

cold sinks so even with it open not alot of loss less its out in the wind. i put an old bath towl in the top when i have a blade that will not let the foam plug fit proper
for you guys that have over filled necks on your tanks be careful in transport as thats the weak link on the tank and once a tank fails the fix costs 90% of jsut buying a new tank
