Should I join AARP

Serious question (well semi-serious). I turned 50 and got a bunch of applications to join AARP. Its only $16 for the year. The only thing I know is that if you have an AARP card you get a little discount at some hotels.

I joined for a year. The discounts were not much use to me, and these days discounts are everywhere on line. I vote no.

AARP has a political agenda that is definitely not mine, regarding Obamacare, gun rights, and other issues. I am 70, and neither I nor my wife will ever join. To us, a few dollars of savings here and there are not worth selling out.

What Mike said. Its a political organization (a radical one, in my view) masquerading as a "retired persons" organization. They send me crap too. I draw a vulgar picture and sent it back to them in the envelope they paid for.

I have no idea what AARP could do for me. I just hate nagging. Constant junk mail from these guys, irritates the hell out of me. Some organizations send me something a few times a year but AARP is constant.

I don't know about their political agenda, but I get mail from nature organizations. You can guess the line they take that they think I'll go for. :barf: I'm on their side on enjoying nature and treating animals right, but STFU about international conferences banning anything that's fun. :D

Try AMAC it is an alternative to AARP. I won't join AARP.

at 61 that sums it up for me.

A total waste of money.

Join AAA. At least they'll send a truck out for you if you get a dead battery! And you get the same discount at motels on the road.

I generally think AARP is a waste of money. You can get as good or better prices for things like insurance if you search around (so my Dad said anyway). But I am a member as it is included with my old AOL account.

You can get better discounts by joining AAA, the NRA, and other organizations. Also, as mentioned above, the AMAC is a better alternative to the AARP Marxist group.

100% agree. AARP has a sinister agenda imho.

I'm glad I asked. Will not be joining! What I saw about their benefits are minimal; especially in light of their politics.

I agree, and this is why I stopped being a member. I do however think they do some good also in the area of preserving the rights of the elderly.
I would not join for just the discounts. You can do as well or better without them. They take a cut on everything.

This. I joined for a year and immediately dropped out when they sold us out for Obumbler Care.

Agreed!!! There is an alternative organization called AMAC, if you really want to get the discounts. They bills themselves as "The Voice of Americans 50+" and "The Conservative Alternative to AARP". But as others have said, you can get discounts elsewhere.

I am piling on to what MikeH said. Besides being a bunch of leftists, AARP has turned into an insurance company.

I am losing my medicare advantage plan at the end of the year and I only have two choices, AARP United and Humana. Humana is more expensive, but I can't see giving AARP my money.

AARP is supposed to be non-profit !! They actually make lots of profit . Politically they are far left , buddies of Obama etc.

What others have posted, the AARP will get over 1 billion from kickbacks from selling out seniors' Medicare Advantage plans to fund Obamacare. I hope the new administration will put the IRS on them to revoke their tax exempt status.
