Being a traditional kind of guy, I don't think the paracord on the traditional knives really does it for me. I like having a lanyard but I'd like to start using leather instead of paracord. Just wondering what some of you use out there, I really don't even have a clue where to begin or what/where to buy. Any advice anyone has is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

The knives in question are a #71 Bullnose, #21 Bullbuster, and a #83.

Oh and pictures are welcome as always!:D

Round leather cord can be purchased from craft stores in all sort of various diameters and colors. Its' round and smooth and no ugly rough side. I bet some really cool lanyards could be made from it.

I bought a spool of dark brown 3/16' diameter round cord, but it's a bit too thick to do any knot work for lanyards.

Splice it? I know it is possible to splice "solid core" rope /lines. If the cord you have is hollow core, splicing would be a lot easier, though.

Here's a fob I made. It would probably look neater if I used round rather than flat lacing. It's a Reeve's style noose, and I got frustrated trying to keep the smooth sides on the outside of the winding.

I actually prefer the look of the flesh side to the skin side of leather lanyards. I think that the smooth side gets polished up a bit and just doesn't fit the look of my user knives as readily.

71 in 01 and sanded micarta with a boot lace leather lanyard showing its age.

I use a goatskin lace I had a roll of. It's not very thick, but for light eight knives it's a great way to make a thin lanyard to stay out of the way.

Me too. I like watching the leather change with time and use.

Can you give some details on the knots used in that lanyard? looks interesting, particularly how you finished the end.

I really like the look of the rough leather lacing, where did you guys that use that get it from? Is that a sort of Hobby Lobby purchase (craft store, only one near me) or what?

Shoe store》work boot lace or boat shoe lace

I always get the 5 pound or 2 pound farmers leather bundle at Michael's craft store, hobby lobby carries something similar. Last bag I got had about 50 feet of lacing in it that was perfect for lanyards, and pieces perfect for strops. Hard to beat at around $7.

I think this is where mine came from as well, but it may as well be boot lace.

You can do a very tight braid, looks good and is strong. This is dyed Deer hide but you can buy a used leather jacket in thrift stores to cutand use.

I do have some old deer leather lying around too, I might give that a try...well that and running by the hobby store on my lunch break! Thanks guys!

Pipeman, I really like your idea for the slip/lanyard I thought about doing something like this. I take it you made it to hang deep the the pocket but be easy to get to?

It's really simple, just a diamond knot that leads to a basic lanyard fob. It just looks that way bc with the thin lace you can tighten it up enough that it looks like a solid piece

Hi Bear, I pass the loop through my belt loop then the slip through the loop and it hangs straight up in the bottom of my front pocket. Pulled out with the lanyard. The slip is folded double layer and glued so the skin side is inside and outside. Lots of lint on the suede side that gums up your joints.

Best regards

Robin

Did you somehow tie the lanyard knot around a loop so you can take the whole thing off of a knife? the 2 strands coming out of the Lanyard knot go in the same side of the hole. Also, what is a "Basic Lanyard Fob"? Is that the reeve noose thing?

Well since it was so thin I just wrapped the lace around the lanyard hole twice so it would be a little more "sturdy". And yes I believe it's the same that reeve uses, I literally just typed "lanyard" into google and this was the easiest one. I'll post some better pics tonight of the lanyard and a link to the site I got the lanyard instructions from too

Agree, on traditional knives, paracord seems out of school.

Check this thread Here for some tips on making a braided leather lanyard/fob
