I am a shun knife owner and bought my knives with the guarantee that a lifetime sharpening service was included.

Now that kershaw has discontinued this service is it possible to receive a full or partial refund on that Guarantee? Seems a little like indian giving so I will spend dollars elsewhere...

I'd recommend that you learn to sharpen yourself. If you get something like a Spyderco Sharpmaker, you'll be able to get your knives sharper than the factory edge, and you won't have to keep shipping your knives. I mean, after 10 sharpenings, the sharpener will more than pay for itself.

Yeah, it looks like it isn't offered anymore. From your posts I've seen in Maint-Tinkering you could probably do a better job yourself.

I can do a better job myself that is not my point.

My point is the knives were purchased with this guarantee and they cannot default on it, as per ny state law, without refunding my purchase price. And I do want my money back for I did not receive what I purchased.

Please don't assume I am unable to sharpen, I can get shaving hair results from a broken ceramic flowerpot, if I wanted to waste my time...

I bought a guarantee and now I want that free service or my money back for the service that was guaranteed for life of the product. Not guaranteed until they figure out it costs themm too much. I paid for it I want it.

My abilities have nothing to do with what I was promised.....

DO you like the Knife? How many times have you sent it in to be sharpened? if you are really pissed call the NY state AG office...

Sounds like you bought a knife you ended up not liking and are trying to figure out a way to get rid of it...

I have four shun knives all over two years old, I have sharpened them all a couple times, all tree topping sharp.

Is there something wrong with buying a brand based on their lifetime guarantee andcwhen they cancel that guarantee, feeling slighted?

I have 7 or 8 benchmades with a lifesharp guarantee, never used it, but I paid for it...

Please don't make anymore foolish assumptions about my intentions. This post was created so a kershaw representative could give me a valid response. I have bren on this bladeforums since the first week in 1998 so PLEASE

Verbatim from the 2010 Shun Catalog:

WARRANTY
If you have a warranty concern, please DO NOT return your knife to the place of purchase.
All of KAI’s quality knives and housewares products are guaranteed for the lifetime of the original owner to be free of defects when
received from the factory. Any product we find to be defective in its original material, construction, or workmanship will be repaired or
replaced with the same item or one of equal value at no charge. Of course, normal wear, abuse such as using the knife as a substitute
for other tools, or neglect are excluded from this non-transferable warranty. Please take a moment to register your purchase through the
Warranty link on www.shuncutlery.com. For complimentary sharpening or repairs, please fill out the warranty form at www.shuncutlery.
com or call 1-800-325-2891 and speak to our Warranty department.

If you have some kind of documentation that states there is a lifetime guarantee on sharpening I would like to see it.

Jameson, Within Kai USA, Shun is a completely different division from Kershaw/ZT. Different personnel, promotions, representation, etc... The mod's here are not involved with Shun, but rather with the sporting side (Kershaw/ZT) of our business. Sorry that we can't be much help with your specific request here.

I would have hoped you may have called a Shun representative to go over your concern, if you have yet to, I would recommend doing so.

I will say that manufacturers in general make random changes to pricing, programs, policy, etc...throughout a given year. This is not an unusual practice, but rather a side effect of the rapidly changing culture of business.

I do not think I have ever seen someone get so bent/aggressive about a "free sharpening" that they can do themselves. Wow...

From the website:

We are happy to announce that effective April 1st, 2011, Shun Cutlery offers the highest quality knife sharpening and restoration services through our partnership with Perfect Edge Sharpening.

Prices for sharpening and restoration services have been negotiated at a substantially reduced cost for Shun knife owners. A fee schedule for services is listed below. Customers will also benefit from two-day turn around service on sharpening orders.

To take advantage of these sharpening services, please send your knives to one of the authorized regional service locations, along with the completed form identifying the type of service being requested.

If you believe that you have a defective product, please see warranty information here.

Other Sharpening Options
A second sharpening option is to purchase a whetstone or electric sharpener. Shun offers several whetstones as well as a three-piece Sharpening System that includes hone, whetstone, and a bamboo stand angled to 16° that makes sharpening easy.

For an electric sharpening option we recommend the Shun electric sharpener, which matches the 16° angle of our cutlery.

Sending Knives for service

* Carefully pack your knives. Packing must survive multiple handlings and arrive intact, so please be careful. Find packing tips here
* Complete the service request form you can download here. Please keep a copy for yourself and include a copy with your knives.
* Perfect Edge will contact you with the total charges after sharpening, including return freight, to make arrangements for payment with Visa, MC or Amex.

Thanks Thomas. Those are very reasonable prices, dunno what the fuss is about.

+1 In the grand scheme of things, there are millions of other more worthy things to complain about than a few dollars to sharpen a knife. But, I guess it's the OP's right to complain if it bothers him that much.

Its was originally supposed to be free is the point. As someone who also bought a Shun, for my mother in part so that she could just send it in when it got past the point of a honing steel without my needing to set aside time to sharpen it, now she would have to pay, which means she won't send it in and I'm sure many others are of a similar mindset, even reasonable prices like those aren't free which will deter original owners who bought it thinking it would be covered by warranty.

Granted this is completely the wrong place to take that sort of problem, with the complete wrong attitude...

She'd have to pay to ship it anyway. The additional cost for sharpening isn't that much, I don't see why that would deter her.

But if OP has never used this service and doesn't need it, what does it matter? You've lost no money, and you even suggest that Shun should give you a full refund? They're a business; they're not here to give knives away. And as a side note, who cares about Lifesharp? Benchmade doesn't do a very good factory edge.

Kershaw forum the wrong place to discuss kershaw warranty?

Wow...Ok, read here again. Pay attention to the BOLD text.

No, Kershaw/ZT forum is the perfect place to discuss a Kershaw/ZT warranty. There is no Shun or Kai USA forum so you'll need to contact a Shun rep as Thomas suggested I guess.
