I have noticed that Silicone (plumber's) grease sticks really well, applies easily, spreads out thinly and is reletively cheap. IMO, perhaps I have come across the greatest knife protectant I have found. I prefer it over ren wax because it's easier to see if you've covered the knife completely.
Thoughts?

I use Ren wax as well but cleaned and applied MARINE TUF-CLOTH on some of my collection last night.Takes a bit of time to dry depending on how much you apply.Used A.G.'s RUST-FREE and it worked well for me,it's silicone as well. Can you pick up the silicone grease sticks at hardware,Home Depot?
Thanks,Walking Man.

Silicone is non-toxic. No inhalants, nothing to go through your skin, unlike most of the other lubes around. There is also a food grade silicone oil if you need it, but if you wish to use your blade to cut food I'd recommend you rather use food grade mineral oil.

If you are still concerned, here is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for standard viscosity silicone oil.

Notice that the key ratings are all zero i.e. minimal (FLAMMABILITY 0 REACTIVITY 0 HEALTH 0).

Can't get much safer than that!
