i haven't seen anyone do a comparison before so here goes...silky states the medium is for soft and green wood and the fine for hardwoods. i tested a super accel 210 (fine teeth, top one in the pic) against the pocket boy 170 (medium) and my initial results are:

1. on dry hard wood the fine teeth is noticeably less effort, faster, and the cut is cleaner (important if you're making furniture but not at all just for firewood obviously). hard to put a number on it but i'd say the fine teeth felt about 30% easier - not way easier but definitely noticeably so.
2. on soft or green wood the medium teeth was faster.
3. on damp hard wood or if the outside layer of it is somewhat punky/rotten then the medium teeth is noticeably less effort and faster because the wider teeth got rid of the wet saw dust better whereas it tended to clog with the fine teeth, slowing it way down.

in upcoming trips i'll compare them both against each other and against the bob dustrude quick buck saw to see which one i prefer for general use.

nice review. I always go with the medium teeth, I don't like the fine tooth and the large, when not cutting big wood tends to skip and those teeth are sharp and have caused injury. silky makes the best hand saws bar none.

thanks! as for skipping, here's bearthedog demonstrating a safer way to start sawing...once the saw is deep into the wood that a chance of it skipping is highly unlikely then switch to normal hold.

I've found that the large teeth work the best for me; I'm not cutting any hardwood- almost exclusively pine/fir/spruce (occasionally aspen/cottonwood)

I do have an extra fine blade for a Pocketboy that I carry in my hunting pack for bone

agreed the Silky cuts better than any other handsaw I've used and I've used a lot of them

My 170 has the medium teeth too, and for what I've used it on - mostly green wood and only a little seasoned - it seems to work equally well.
