I decided to try one of these after seeing it compared to a Small Sebenza. Long and short of that is that, while this knife doesn't have the same presence that a Sebenza does, it is nice enough/nicely made enough, and similar enough that, at the price point, I will boldly call this a better knife.
But that's not the point of the thread. This thread is to share with you a simple modification that I made to my knife that made it that much better, and to show off some pictures of the carbon fiber model, called the Gent Select, and praise its superiority over the standard version. Having this in hand and having seen pictures of the standard knife, I think I would be unhappy with the standard blade finish. I also don't think G10 is fancy, and anything claiming to be a gentleman's knife should not have G10. But that's just my opinion. The slight acid stonewash finish is perfect.
But they still ship with shiny clips! The clip is fine, to me - it functions a lot like the Spyderco wireclip. Low profile, deep carry, and not the most robust but it doesn't need to be.
I took the clip off and dipped it twice in some ferric chloride, so that the finish of the clip now matches the rest of the knife (I did not tumble the clip, so it is actually slightly different, but the shade is the same now, and it is not shiny, which looks better in pocket.
Further, I have taken some pictures along side a GEC Northfield #78, just to give a size comparison. We're talking about similarly sized knives, for the most part. The cutting edge on the Gent is maybe 1/16" longer than the #78, while the handle is maybe 1/4" longer, respectively.
Enough already, Traum, just show us the pictures!!!
All in all, this is a blade that probably ought to work its way into that category belonging to the 940 and PM2 and the rest of the "every knife nut should own one of these" knives, because they've accomplished something remarkable at this price.
