Bad weather here a couple weeks ago found me bored with nothing else to do so I tried to take some pics that explain the braid found on the SLCC. Using my AR as a model here we go:

Start with two strands of para cord about 14-18" long

Step 1: Tie a simple over hand knot and leave it kind of loose:

Step 2: Thread the second piece of cord through the loop created by you first knot and tie another overhand knot

Tighten both knots

Step 3: You now have a knot that looks like an X or a cross created by the four leads of para cord. So starting with the top left lead going clockwise fold lead one over lead two

Continue by folding lead two over one and three then, three over two and four

finally fold four over three and tuck under one

Tighten by working your way around the knot and pulling each lead until the knot is very tight

Now starting with the top right lead going counter-clockwise reverse the pattern

Continue with the pattern alternating clockwise then counter-clockwise pulling tight on each step

When it gets the length you want, trim the excess off of each lead and seal by burning

Confused? Any one who figures this out from these posts feel free to offer better photos and instruction. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

I got everything up to "Start with two strands of para cord about 14-18" long"...

Thanks Molexey,

great pics, crystal instructions.. I have no need of one of these on a knife at present, but now I do have a nifty 550 black paracord keyring..:D

Hey, I wanted to give it a shot, had some cord around and could think of no better use.. was fun though :)

thanks for the instructions! it was real easy to do, especially with 2 people to tighten the 4 strands:) . although it kinda sucked when i went to burn the ends and a flaming hot peice of nylon burnt the skin off of my finger:(

I've been in the world of architecture for over eight years. I've taken intense engineering courses. I've designed many houses, industrial facilities, condos, and a hotel but I still can't seem to get this knot down!!

Dude, you rock. Thanks for the info, now I just have to have about a half hour. Thanks Molexey.

Christiaan is not the only one with a new key chain :) Just wanted to see if I could do it.

Thanks Molexey

I always liked this style of lanyard but could never figure out how to do it. Your pics and instructions are top notch and a breeze to do. Thanks for enlightening us.

Cool! Glad to hear it's working. It does make a pretty good key ring or zipper pull tab.

Thanks for the picture and instructions. After reading your post, I was reminded of a time when I went to summer camp as a kid (maybe 30 years ago) I remember making these keychain things out of colored, flat plastic strands using the same knot.
