Slightly OT: Emerson shirt sizing?

I'm about to pull the trigger on an EKI t-shirt but I'm currently in that grey area between small and medium and it makes ordering shirts online kind of a gamble.

I normally prefer shirts to be tight around my chest and shoulders (I have broad shoulders but a small waist) and slightly looser around the waste - I hate when the bottom of a t-shirt is tight which leads to it bunching up.

Now, on Emerson's site they have a sizing FAQ but it's a bit hard to understand, I was hoping maybe you guys could help me interpret what they're trying to say here?:

Mens sizes are also true to size and if for example you wear an XL Beefy-T then any XL Emerson should fit you just fine. However, there are many ways guys like to wear their shirts and it can go from skin tight to loose and easy depending on your style. Our shirts are cut a little trimmer and could be called an athletic fit. So the best way I can describe sizing is like this; if for example, you prefer a snug or tight fitting Beefy-T in a size large then I would recommend an XL in the Emerson and you should be just right. If you prefer a loose style and get this with a large size Beefy-T then a large size in the Emerson will probably fit you just right, nice and loose.

Now the part in bold is what I find a bit confusing. Does it mean that if someone is a bit beefier up top then they want to go up a size while someone of a smaller frame should stick with their normal size?

I sent them an email asking the same question but I was wondering if anyone here had purchased one of their shirts in the past and could maybe offer some input.

Thanks! :)

EKI Customer Service replied and based on their answer (that their shirts are indeed an athletic fit) I decided to go with the medium. I'll be sure to check back in and let you guys know for sure once I receive so that it may be referred to in the future.

the newer graphic shirts tend to run on the smaller side, especially after a wash or two.

i always get xl's. on me they are tighter around the shoulders and looser around the waist, as you say.

im about 510/200.

I have trouble with T-shirt sizes too, a shirt that's big enough round the shoulders for me usually looks like a dress when I put it on. :p

Back in the day...when I was young and V shaped, I had to buy large shirts and "take them in" by sewing down the inside of the seams on both sides of the shirt. [My mother died when I was about 12 and I learned alot of things that helped me be a self sufficient bachelor for the next 20 years.]
Tailoring your own stuff is a good way to display the physique you've worked hard to achieve. It needn't cost much or be difficult. Just another skill set in the resume.
BTW, the shirts I have from Emerson are well sized and like they said are "athletic fit".

Shirt shipped on Monday and I received it yesterday. After a wash, the medium fits perfectly.

So, at 5'8" with a 40" inch chest, the medium is the best fit. Just FYI.

I have a half dozen Emerson 'T' shirts and the zipper hoodie. In all cases the sizing is as advertised and the product quality is top notch. Wear 'em proudly!

Indeed. This shirt (which I'm wearing right now) is extremely comfortable and fits great.
