I'm a somewhat recent home owner. Suddenly I have chores I didn't use to have. One of them is clearing the ditch between my property and the road of all the thistle and other nasty things that grow in it. I'd been putting it off because in my former urban environment the only weed eater I had was a plug in electric and that just wasn't going to work. Then it hit me, years ago I bought a ditch bank blade as sort of a novelty. It had a few uses in my former place (it did a great job edging creeping ground cover on he sidewalk) but I never really did much work with it.

But I had this ditch, filled with crap. Machete? I wish I had a scythe... If only I had some sort of blade to clear a ditch with, some sort of ditch blade I could use to clear the near bank...

It worked great, I don't think it took much longer than using a weed eater and it was certainly more fun (despite finding every hidden rock in the ditch).

There is a golf club style sickle that can do the job, though I go with the gas weedater these days

Search the big box stores for a double edge weed cutter, a 30" handle runs around 20 bucks, a 36" handle is a little more expensive. The one I bought last year wasn't very sharp, I took a bastard file to it and fixed that problem. It will take out heavier stuff than a gas weed eater.
