I know I am new and have been asking a LOT of questions. I promise I am searching before I ask. Thanks so much for what you have answered so far.

Does anyone have any experience or can guide me to a small quality liquid filled compass to place in the top end of a walking stick?

I am thinking 1" or a little more would fit into the two Oak staves I have cured and been carving.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Billy - well THAT isn't perfect enough!

Thanks - Anyone else can post up too. Brass would be a nice accent (wish list because Billy's fits the bill.

Try this, from Sun Company:

I'm working on the exact same project for craft shows. Sun supplies these in 20mm (about 3/4 inch) and 18mm. The liquid filled are best (grade AA and A), and decent IMHO. The AA model glows in the dark, the others don't.

I'm countersinking mine to protect the compass against breakage (plastic housing). They recommend making the hole slightly larger to allow for wood shrinkage and to prevent possible cracking of the compass. I'm using a 13/16 spade bit for the 20mm compasses. I'm mounting the compass in the hole with exterior double faced mounting tape. Good luck :)

Thanks EMS - I will take pictures of it today - it is finished with sanding.

It is an oak stave that I have cured in my garage for... oh... 10 years. I have two to make sticks out of and one cane sized stave.

The one I will be finishing is a 61 inch model (I am 6'5") I am thinking about adding a larger pommel made from Oak where I sink the Compass in that peice and screw the two together. I am worried about cracking the stave I have because it is only 1 1/4" in diameter and almost all compasses are nearly 1" in Diameter.

The Pommel option would allow me to experiment with drilling atleast. I will take progression pictures and put up a thread when I get it done.

I also need to learn how to do some decorative knotting to make a lanyard and grip so the final product might be a while. ;)
