Snaps and punches for leather

Hello,

I'm working on a fixed blade leather sheath. I need to order some supplies to install a snap for knife retention and have a few questions before I order:

1. I'm using some 8-9 oz leather for the strap. I was going to use a line 24 brass snap as that is what it says for leather that thick, but the cap is so wide (14mm). Could a line 20 snap be used on 8-9 oz leather (description says for 6-7 oz). Didn't know if wetting the strap would all the leather to compress a bit for the L20 to work.

2. Do you drill the holes for you snap posts or do you use a punch? If you use a punch, what sizes do you use for L20 and L24 snaps?

Thanks guys, I'm really liking working with leather.

Both Ligne 20 and Ligne 24 snaps come with different post lengths available and depending on the post length, either will work on either the 8/9, 7/8, or 6/7 weight leathers. The correct punch size for either snap is a number 3 punch either drive or pliers type. The ligne 20 snap should be correct for about a 1/2" to 5/8" wide strap and really 8/9 oz is overkill for the strap thickness.

The information above is my personal opinion and may not be the opinion of others.

Thanks Paul. I made another strap in 6 oz as it did seem overly thick for the intended use with the 8-9 oz leather. Now I can use the 20's as intended.
Cheers,
John

I agree with Paul. Line 24's are wide, but they are also quite thick from the side as well. Strong but bulky. I cannot comment on 20's as it's been years since I used them, but I'll not be using 24's for retention straps on sheaths.

You can also use a French edger to reduce a bit of thickness if you're close but can't quite reach. Punch the hole then stick a leg from the beveler in the hole on the flesh side. Turn the beveler around the hole to skive what you need out. Works very well for sinking the hardware before lining.
