I'm busily trying to unload a sweet Microtech Combat Talon II (grind by Walther Brend hinself!) to save some $$$ toward a KMG, but just out of curiosity I thought I'd find out if any of youse guyse had anything lying around that could get me out of the bastard file world and into making knives a little faster with the help of power tools! Anyone? A spare KMG with a great motor, priced shipped for $500 would be perfect. LMK! :D

Shoot, I'll even throw in a piece of carbon fiber AND a piece of textured orange G-10 for it! :D

I can charge you by the hour to use mine....hehehe. Or better yet, hook me up with that CNC mill you were talking about and I will let you grind for free! :D

NOT A KMG BUT IT'S IN YOUR BUDGET

Hey, get in line! I know that besides me, there's several other's who've asked about this in the past.

Even more common heavy grinders like Burr King or Wilton Square Wheels are pretty hard to find used at a decent price.

Good luck in your search.

Do you know what a Burr King grinder costs? Try about $2500.00, before accessories, 10" wheel, small wheel attachment, vertical front platen, etc.

They are a top of the line, very smooth running grinder. You just don't hear much of them anymore. One of mine has been in use since 1975 or so, and I bought it used in 1985-6, for $1300.00, and considered myself lucky to get it. it was/is a VS. They don't lose much value.

I have a Blademaster grinder I might be willing to sell. It has 8, and 10" contact wheels, small wheel attachment(best in the business, IMO), vertical platen attachment, etc. I want about $650.00, and you'd have to pick it up here. No way, with my back, that I'd ship that thing. :D

IMO, that grinder(?), is overpriced for what it does by about $15-2000.00. It does not look like it would perform most knifemaking functions well, if at all.

Any lessor priced grinder commonly used for knifemaking, would work better for our purposes.
To be honest, my old Blademaster mentioned above, has attachments to do the same thing, and for 1/6 of the money. ;)

I absolutely agree; sorry I wasn't clear. We tried one of them at work and ended up sticking with our herd of beat-up Square Wheels. The "terror" part referred to the price, not the performance. :D

It is a nice machine. Very well made with heavy castings and good parts. But, I suspect KMGs provide comparable materials&workmanship, are engineered for what we do, and don't need a compressor to maintain belt tension.

Mike,

Yeah, I'm painfully aware of what a Burr King costs. Even well used they bring $1000.00 or more if you can find them. I've been watching used machinery journals as well as knife maker forums for over two years looking for "the" deal on one. It hasn't popped up yet and I live in So Cal where lots of used machinery is available as CA is so good at driving industry away.

John

You'd think there'd be more, what with one of Burr King's factories located right there in SoCal.

Ah, the Bader Space Saver is a real grinder!

Bader and click on "floor stand." In the sidebar are a few attachments, even a hinged plate to lay it on its side... That one I don't know about. But what a machine! I think it's on the order of $10K though.

Well crap Chiro, I thought I was in a different thread or I'd have posted that somewhere else.

As to your question, I don't think there's such a thing as a spare grinder! :D Keep saving, you'll get there. (I'm still saving for a HT oven, looks like about one more year and I'll be able to spring for it.)

I just browsed the whole Dynabrade thing. That grinder would be super-duper handy in my shop, I can tell you that! I think they are trying to express their versatility over absolute utility. Very pricey, but a fine machine. I'd love to have one, but for the price I don't think its a must have.

Don't know about this particular machine, but I have used Dynabrade air tools, primarily DA's, in the Body Shop business for years. You can't kill'em. Real workhorses, but "pricey" compared to some others.

Heck, I'd break that cute little thing in about 5 minutes. :D

Chiro,
You've been on this board a month longer than I have, since 1999, and if you're still using files then its well past time to plunk your money down like everyone else and join the club. Six years is a long time to be using files unless "that's your deal".

I know that upwards of $1300 (and beyond) is a lot of money but if you want to make knives then that's what its gonna ultimately take...if you are serious. Used grinders come along when someone upgrades or dies.

Heck, I started with an upside down portable belt sander clamped in a vise then really went all out and got a 4x36. I've had one of those blue anodized California grinders for about 5 years now.

That's about the best advice I can give at this point, and it was free.

I agree with you, Craig. if a person REALLY WANTS TO MAKE THEIR OWN KNIVES, by BUYING THEIR OWN MATERIAL, they'll find an honest way.

Hell, I sold almost all of my firearms(just kept one for defense), a collection of theater knives, some of which I'd had since I was a child, and, and half my furniture to get tools for knifemaking. Where there's a will, there's a...............Well, you should get the idea!!
That's all you're going to get for free from me too!!

Chiro,
All I can say is "If you want to run with the big dogs, get off the friggin porch".

Most of these makers barely get minimum wage. Why you trying to beg them out of a grinder? Just cause they are some of the most free giving people I've ever ran across doesn't give someone a right to take advantage of it.

Craig, Institutional Memory is such a great thing, isn't it? ;)
