My old supply of socks is wearing out, so I need
several new pair.

From the descriptions on the internet, it is very hard to tell if some
bargain socks are good or not.

I am needing some medium or heavy socks. I was looking on campmor
and sportsmansguide.

Hey Guys..

FNC..

Both Cabelas and Bass Pro have socks that are lifetime..

Wear them out, poke a hole through them with a toenail, and take them back. They'll hand you a new pair right on the spot, no questions asked..

At $10 a pair,, they are a little pricey,, but Excellent socks and worth Every penny..

Costco was selling Head brand (the ski and tennis people) merino wool (85wool 15nylon socks for 8 dollars a three pack, mine have lasted at least 3 winters each and have more in them... I just bought 2 more 3 packs as my son now wears the same shoe size as I do.

I have several pair of the head socks and like them. I also have wigwam, which are outstanding socks. REI has their Wigwam socks on sale for 25% off.

+ 1 on the costco socks. They are now a 4 pack where i live for $10. Best deal in merino wool out there.

Those Head socks are the same as a big name outdoor brand with a diffrent lable-- I just can't remember which one-- Thorlos?

Socks are a real money maker of the ourdoor shops. They discount stuff like jackets and make it back on accessories like gloves and socks.

Good brands? Thorlo, Wigwam, Patagonia. I wouldn't wear wool socks because they itched, but the Merino wool is a whole different thing. I do like Coolmax too-- very good for thin summer stuff with trail runners.

Backcountry.com has a unch on sale, but they still aren't cheap. Sierratradingpost.com and Campmor.com are good sites for clothing deals. Don't forget REI's outlet site too. You won't get three pair for $10 though!

I'd recommend Smartwool. Best wool socks i've ever had - no itchiness at all. Will keep your feet dry and warm as much as possible.

Iv'e just got 4 pair of Merino wool hikers from Costco for $10 !!!!!

If they don't last long I'm not bothered for that price !

A couple of thoughts on socks. . .

First, I believe that Thorlo socks ar synthetic, not wool. They have been my standby for years.

In regards to cheap socks, I'm always leary. I'm really sensitive to things like the stitching on the toe being abrasive. I've had this happen a couple of times where the stitch was right where it would rub and the thread was pretty harsh.

For those of you guys that have got the CostCo ones, any problems?

All too often people neglect their feet, but they're vital in the rough!
I find that high grade wool whether heavy or lightweight is by far the best, your feet don't sweat, don't get cold and they feel comfortable. Out here in Scandinavia the temps get ultra low, wool lasts well too. I like the sound of what Cabelas offers as Normark pointed out, must import some of them as decent socks here cost about 10 EURO a pair upwards (14dollars?)

Going on two years now and no wear 'n tear problems with them yet. Our house lives Japanese style (shoes come off at the door! Period!) and the Costco socks work real well as house slippers on our carpet & tile floors. Actually tile grout, if not finished well, is the worst abrader of socks IME.

My merino's get laundered in bachelor-fashion. That is: any- and every-thing goes in the washer together until I get a load, then it all gets washed on warm wash/cold rinse perma-press cycle and dried on medium gentle cycle. I wear merino's most of the year, only switching to Thorlo running anklets for hot (80-degree F plus weather) summer days, which are mercifully rare in the Pacific NW USA. During late fall/winter/early spring I like to add polypro liners under the merino socks to keep my feet dry.

The only "issue" I have bumped into with the Costco socks is that the footie of the sock fits somewhat loosely on my foot, not a lot but enough to notice occasionally, while the band at the top is good and snug. YMMV.
