Sodbusters

I like 'em.... I carried a Case sodbuster every day for about 3 or 4 years, back in the very early 70's... it did just about everything I asked it to do, but I have since found that a multi-blade knife suits my needs more completely now.

I was partial to the Maserin Scout for a while, before that back in the army 80’s I carried a Opinel 7 which if it isn’t a “Sodbuster” certainly has the butcher blade. Find the pattern a great all purpose knife but personally even the junior sizes are too big or a poor shape for my pocket carry.

I've always felt the '37 pattern Sod Buster Jr. from Case, in stainless, is as close to a perfect tomato-slicer/kitchen utility blade as I've seen. I only wish their large '38-pattern soddie had the exact same grind geometry (blade thinness & full hollow grind, vs the thicker flat grind of the larger blade). The length of the larger one would make it even better for kitchen use, if all else were exactly the same.

The "Sodbuster" pattern is somewhat popular here, from what I've seen.
I'd guess at least 75% of the good folk here have at least one from one or more of the various manufacturers.

Mine is a Case Sodbuster Jr. with True Sharp blade.
I like multi-blades best, so I don't carry it often.
I did use it in the kitchen quite a bit when I was still cooking for myself.

My first knife purchase as an adult was a Loewen Messer “Hippekniep” that I bought in Amsterdam in 1970. I still have it.
I have Case Sodbusters in both sizes, and a couple of examples of the Maserin Plow with D2 steel. It is a very popular pattern, with almost every European country making a version of the working knife. Even the Sodbuster Jr. is bigger than I like to carry these days. When I do carry one, it is usually a Maserin, which is a size that falls about midway between fhe fullsized and smaller knives.

This thread needs pictures. I'll have to make do with a recycled photo for now.

Not sure why you marked this as "off topic." It's a great topic.

I have four sod buster style knives:
Two Case Sod Buster Jr in their jigged bone handles. Amber Bone SS and Chestnut Bone CV:

Here's the Amber Bone SS:

And the Chestnut CV:

Two others I have are the standard black synthetic Case Sod Buster Jr. SS with the plow etching on the blade, and a Queen Country Cousin in green linen Micarta, D2 steel. I don't have pics of those to post. I've been using that Amber Bone in the photo just recently, and it is out on my desk right now.
