SOG Omega Spring?

Greetings, I’m new to the forum and need some help with my SOG Quake XL. The omega spring gave out and I’m trying to find a replacement. I have scoured the internet but to no avail. I’ve seen videos and info for just about every other open assist knife made except the Quake. I have seen many omega springs on eBay and Etsy but I’m not sure which ones I should consider. Any advise would be appreciated.
Regards,
Tx Knife

that's a discontinued older knife isn't it?

gsm isn't a part stocking company, so getting parts ain't gonna happen. does it use an omega spring? I'm not sure what springs that knife uses? anyways..... I'm not sure anyone is making aftermarket springs for them. think your stuck with few options...and none are great.

btw, welcome to the forum, howdy.....

SOG doesn't use omega springs, they use their own version. I'm not aware of any third-party options, but I haven't looked recently. Most likely you will have to send your knife into SOG for warranty.

Thank you for the reply. GSM never got back with me but I understand that it’s under new ownership. The knife has served me well over the year. It’s the only open assist that I own and probably the last. Right now it’s just a folding knife. Hopefully someone will have had some past experience like mine and found a work around. Thanks for the welcome!

I might be crazy but I could swear that I read somewhere that guitar strings can be used to make your own Omega springs.
I've read piano wire, but guitar strings wouldn't surprise me...I'm not so sure this knife uses an omega spring. it's a plunge lock setup with safety, but not an auto coil spring, that i could tell from a video of it. a thumb push the swing guard setup and assisted open type. push plunge lock and fold it closed.

8 year old sog video on these models..

Hello, I read the same thread about piano wire but I’m not set up to try that fix. I don’t think that it uses a coil spring but I may be wrong. I found a local knife shop that said it would try to work on it if I found the spring. I’m thinking not a lot of folks know how to work on open assist knives. I may just take it to them and have them take it apart as I don’t want to do it and not get it back together. That being said once it’s apart I can get a better idea of what type and size spring it will need.

I don't think you'll be able to find the spring. sog has used various spring setups in different assisted open models. other than opening that one and seeing what is in it, it's gonna be about impossible to figure it out. gsm won't be any help. I'd talk to some of the member craftsmen here and see who willing to open it and figure it out for you, maybe even make you a spring, if they are able to?

....or as ya said.... see if that knife shop will open it and see what's being used for the assisted open, spring wise. I hunted high and low for a disassembly video of your knife and came up with zip.

Thanks for the support! I agree the are no videos except ones reviewing it. I will gladly ship to and pay a master member to fix it, if they are willing to take it on. I was a gift from my father who’s since passed on but it’s still a knife that does the job that it was meant for. I own many knives but that one goes with me everywhere I go. Worst case I have it opened and go from there or just keep using it as is. 😊

The Sog website states they do warranty their knives and provide a phone number for claims. About 5 years ago they sent me for free a replacement thumbstud for a discontinued knife.

Thanks for the info browshoe. I’ll try giving them a call rather than an email. It’s worth a try.

I can’t say for certain as I have no experience with that model, but, all the SOG assisted knives I have ever disassembled, utilized a wound/coiled spring over the pivot, think clothespin but much more compact. I believe they called it SAT for sog assisted technology.

It may very well be the same spring that’s used to propel common and still currently made models such as the Flash.

I’m assuming the assisted opening spring is what you’re referring to when you say “omega spring”.
Which is Benchmades name for the bent wire springs that push the axis lock bar into battery.

Take it apart and see what the piece looks like, if it’s already broken then you can’t do any more harm in removing it.

Thank you for info BJE. I was wondering about that type of spring as well. I found a website that sells the very same spring that you a referring to. They come in two sizes. 3/8 and 1/2 inch. I ordered the larger size. The price was less than $10. Once a get it apart I will have a better idea if they will work.

Update us on your findings, it could help others in the future when a search brings them here, and because I’m curious.

Will do, I will look for the website that sells the springs but I will probably take the knife to a local shop to have it disassembled. Not sure how complex the inner mechanism is as I tend to goof things up. More to come.

Exactly True North. The coil springs that BJE referred to can be found on KnifeKits.com. I bought a 4 pack with a variety of spring tensions.

Their current website has a phone number.
And a physical address.....both of which are for GSM Outdoors....
