Just got the SOG Pillar, and I’m in love. SOG is Probably my favorite knife maker. They just generally make good stuff, IMO. S35VN is such a fantastic steel.

Also bought the Cold Steel SRK in San Mai III (VG-10 core), and I was curious what you guys thought about one company/knife over the other?

I also just learned that Cold Steel makes an SRK in Cpm 3V, which I’ve never played with but heard awesome things about. I’m excited to put these through some field testing!

You should check out what TOPS, Esee and Becker are bringing to the table.

Search here for Cold Steel info : https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/cold-steel-knives.895/

Despite GSM customer service faults , I believe you'd do fine with either the San Mai or 3V SRK .

3V is a very tough steel and great for this type of knife . Easily the best steel choice of those you mentioned .

IMO , the classic Cold Steel products manufactured in Taiwan are still of generally good quality .

SRK design has been around a long time and is well proven .

The old Carbon V Cold Steel is where it’s at, loved my TM but hated that damn Kraton handle.

The SRK has a design that goes back some 33 years. It has been used by many civilians, used by military and has a good reputation for being tough.
The SOG Pillar was introduced 5/6 years ago (I think...) so it doesn't have as long a history. But it's design is really something SOG should have done maybe a decade earlier, basing off the classic "SOG style" look. Take the immensely successful Seal Pup, go full tang and removable scales.

The SOG is a higher priced knife with nicer features, but it is a 5" blade. The SRK is more bang for the buck and offers a 6" blade. Doesn't sound like much difference on paper but in real world use there is a difference.

As others have pointed out, both Cold Steel and SOG have the same owner GSM. And a knife choice should be made on the merits of the specific model. not the name brand.

I'd get the SRK in 3V. But, I have a Todd Begg War Junkie series Recondo, made by White River Knife and Tool. It's what the SOG Pillar should have been, or wishes it was. 5-1/4", S35VN, black blade with proper SOG bowie styling, black burlap Micarta scales, and a Boltaron sheath.

The SOG just doesn't appeal to me, aesthetically. Not the hot chick from next door, but the girl from a couple of doors down. Not quite as cute, but just as much fun. Maybe more! No doubt the Pillar is just as capable as the Recondo, and it is less than half the price, so there is that. But, all things being equal, I'd rather date the prom queen.....

Congrats, the Pillar is a great knife , good size feels great in the hand as well . I love mine , SOG nailed it with this one . The SRK is a great choice as well and does feel a bit more substantial than the Pillar but you can’t go wrong with either knife . The Pillar’s fit and finish is very nice compared to the SRK IMO .

I have both knives, and I like them both. But... the SOG Pillar is just a cut above everything else. SOG is a look at the future.

I absolutely definitely without a doubt will never ever buy another cold steel or a sog. Why settle for hamburger when you can have steak. No parts no service no guarantee. No good

What is your knife of choice, Shane? You criticize a lot of other people's choices, but you never reveal what you have.

I have hundreds of knives, and therefore no one "knife of choice". I criticize certain manufacturers when I have valid reasons to do so. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

I have been on this forum for over 20 years...I'm pretty sure I have posted about one or two of the knives I own.
