SOG power assist vs power lock

The PowerAssist has one of the handles' tools replaced with two assisted opening blades, one plain and one serrated. However, the lock isn't terribly strong. The regular Powerlock thus has a few more tools, but the knife on it it a chisel-ground small combo-edge knife. This uses the regular tool lock on the knife and it seems a bit stronger but you can pop it without much effort.

The locks aren't terribly weak, it's just that they are no substitute for a dedicated knife. If you don't carry a knife the Assist's knives are nice because you get two decent-sized ones, but not fantastic. If you do carry a dedicated knife, then the extra tools on the Powerlock might be more useful however the Assist's might make nice backups.

One thing I got for mine was a ClipDraw that allowed me to attach a pocket clip to it without any tools, and that makes it easier to carry and the weight much less noticeable than if it were on a belt sheath or a lump in your pocket.

Be sure to shop around, I've seen wide ranges in price.

I was left hanging by a seller on ebay, this wont be in his x mas stocking.
where can I "shop around"?
it looks like I want the power lock with eod

I just got the SOG powerlock, it is $49.99 at my local Lowe's store.
I figure for that kind of money, you can't go wrong.
It even has the v-cutter on it.

this is what I got:
1 "SOG Specialty Knives & Tools B63-N EOD PowerLock with V-Cutter, Black Oxide"
Tools & Hardware; $67.95

I'm sure it will be loved. I think it's the best multitool of all for someone who already carries a knife. It''s been incredibly handy to me in the few short months I've had it, especially the great powerful huge pointy pliers.

I have both the powerlock and the power assist, I love both of them. If the person your buying it for is getting ready to deply to the desert then I would have to recommend the powerlock because it is easier to keep clean and has less sealed areas to get clogged with sand.

The assist mech. takes up space better occupied with implements . Multi's are great but suck as tactical folders .

What if u were suggesting it to a civilian then witch would u choose.

Neither if you're looking for a full-time multitool. I have the Powerlock and the only thing I like about it is the pliers. When you use it as a screw driver vs. something like the Charge or Kick you'll understand. The pliers are great though and being able to use them with the handles more towards the closed position has been a saver under the sink a few times. I also like the all stainless finish. Still, it's aggravating to use as a multitool because the plier heads are always in the way.

I would recommend the power assist. It has a more substantial blade and the perfect compliment of tools. I also like the pliers better on the PA, I have an older version PL so the plier head may be standard now. I would recommend getting the leather belt case because the nylon one it comes with has alot to be desired. I carry my PA everyday for work, I am tech school instructor, it saves me countless trips to the tool box when I am helping the students.

Brilliant! Thanks for the suggestion. I got a power assist and have balked at carrying it in the nylon case so far. Maybe nekkid will do the trick lols :p Still flipping it around trying to loosen it up.

Eyeing up a skeletool also. Gimme.

Have you tried ordering a leather case from SOG? I have an old Powerlock that came with a leather case, so I just switch them out. I really like the leather case alot, very well put together.
