Has anyone seen this new USA made SOG Seal Commander? In my opinion, this is a beauty of a knife, CPM S35VN steel, micarta handle. Just really nice! But the price is up there for SOG. Thoughts!

You need to read carefully:

  • Blade: Clip point blade with a black PVD finish made from CPM S35VN steel.

It only claims that the black PVD finish is made from S35VN (not sure how that works). The blade could be 420 for all we know.

I guess the shark fin is cute, but it's a little short to be a KA-BAR replacement. Their tanto is a better deal for 5 inches of S35VN.

Looks: This is just my esthetic bias now, but I prefer a blade profile to be less "swoopy" (cant think of a better word just now).. For example, I prefer the looks of the Randall Diver's knife , if optioned without saw teeth, to their #3 or other up swept models . Their classic #1 is of course an Icon in the knife world. But those are a bit larger than the OP's SOGT. Staying with Randall Made, in an even larger knife, I would prefer a Kukri like "Small Sasquatch" over one of their Bowe style models.

Coming back to a smaller size . . .I prefer a more "utility" profile over other mentioned profiles as well. See the Schrade SCHF2SM over their larger Extreme Survival blades in their now discontinued hollow handled one piece line. The CRAK "Backpacker" looks nice, but I don't need one.

I tend to like a drop point or spear point over a clipped pint in a folder. . . .so something like a CRKT M21 over a Buck 110 there. Stiletto-like daggers with a fuller are eye candy, but just too aggressively "stabby" to be considered by me for a using blade to be carried. Darrel Ralph's folding "Maxx" daggers have long called to me. . .Camillus used to make a copy I could afford. Maybe a Gerber Mk-II, a Randall #3 or a Fairburn Sykes for a shadow box on the wall.

But the OP is about a smaller tactical knife after all. I would prefer one of the CRK 5.5 inch Green Beret knives instead of the SOG shown in the OP. It would be pricy too if you could find one.

I'm at a loss. Comparing apples and oranges here but a Pup in AUS-8 made in Taiwan is $65 but a Commander in S35VN made in USA is over six times as expensive??? Hard pass. I paid less than half that for an Esee 4 in S35VN and I can't see how a coating and a little more machining would add that much to the price. Besides, it leans heavy into the tacticool look for my taste.

Not sure it is allowed but if you guys are bored, I have a channel where I have a few videos and work on knives.
Nope.

I do appreciate the conversation and recommendation that my thread has started! Thanks for the thoughts! Be gentle if you go to my videos!

Hi, I really am not trying to "recruit" anyone. If you go to that link I shared, you will see, I only have like 4 videos and they are primarily about knives and my interest in USA made products although I do talk about a Chinese made Spyderco. I don't want to be seen as not wanting to be part of the group because I have really enjoyed all the feedback and suggestions regarding the SOG and alternatives to it! I am collector of knives and have a few (not high end) but my collection is growing!
