I just picked up a Seal Pup with a coated partially serrated blade- the box said the knife is AUS-8 as did the Amazon listing however the knife is marked China. Is the blade actually AUS-8 or could it possibly 8CR13MoV.
Either blade steel is fine with me, i have found AUS-8 to be slightly more corrosion resistant than 8CR and I am using this knife in a marine and coastal environment.
I got the nylon sheath as I have had terrible experiences with SOG plastic and kydex sheaths in the past. It seems to have more versatility for carrying. I can attach it to my life vest or duty belt etc as I need.
This is my first SOG product in a while so I am excited to put the Seal Pup to work.

I'm pretty confident that it's AUS-8, I've seen slightly different grinds of the serrations, when comparing Taiwan knives with the China made knives.

Thanks.
Is it full tang?
I haven’t owned one for a long time.

Yes, the tang goes all the way to the lanyard hole. They're strong knives. I've not had hands on a made in China Seal Pup, but if there were issues it would have been revealed already as they've been producing them there for 4 years or so now.
Be interesting to see how you get on with it as it seems you will be using it more than most do.

Thanks Ruari Ruari
That helped
I will post some pics and a little review after using it for a while. We were looking for smallish inexpensive fixed blades to use at work (marine patrol/fisheries enforcement) and settled on the Seal Pup to test out first.

The Seal Pup and the Cold Steel SRK seem to often be favoured for maritime use.

The SRK in AUS-8 was too large for what we were looking for. The mini-SRK was perfect but the blade was tool steel. We looked at a couple of Ka-bars and ontarios but settled on the SOG. My brother bought two the other day but we havent had the chance to try them out yet.

I had a chance to play with the pup this weekend to build a brush blind. I used the saw on my leatherman to cut anything larger than my thumb but made a point to use the pup for everything else. I cut some salvaged synthetic line and a lot of juniper branches. The serrations worked well to saw through quarter inch juniper. I chopped a few half-inch saplings of soft greenwood. The combo edge doesn't lend itself to bushcraft work as well as other knives but my rationale for buying it wasn’t bushcraft-oriented so all-in-all it performed great out of its niche. When I’m in the woods I don’t feel undergunned with a SAK or a 110, and for the limited cutting I did that day, the pup fit the bill. The sheath has a lot to be desired but I’ve only had the knife for three days. I wore it on my belt from the integral loop and it was situated between two belt loops; on that particular brand of cargo pants (with 4” between loops) it was kind of a nuisance — it was hard to bend or squat without snagging —and definitely hard to conceal but it was easily available if I needed to get to it quickly. It’s definitely not the knife you want to bring into the bush if you only want one knife. I bring a SAK or multitool and a 110 most places but working on or around the water a fixed blade knife is a comfort and the seal pup does what I personally want out of a knife. I wouldn’t worry if it was all I had. It’s a sturdy knife and I’m happy with it.

Did you read this thread before purchase?

Yes. I read that thread when I was researching our knife selection. My China-made seal pup has the metal snap on the retention strap.
