Can anyone fill me in on the SOG Sidewinder Folder? About all I know
is that they look like Tomcats but with spear point blades, were made
in Seki, and came in versions I and II. Also wondering if the Sidwinder is
the same thing as Sogwinder. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Below is text from an old SOG Knives ad for the Sogwinder I and II knives:

Per SOG Knives:

“The Sogwinder I and II build upon the sound construction ideas of the Tomcat and Stingray by offering a drop point folding Bowie style blade combined with an ambidextrous thumb stud for one hand opening. The Sogwinder series is definitely the best of both worlds!”

SPECS:
Sogwinder I Sogwinder II
Blade: 2 3/4” 3 ¾”
440C Stainless Steel
Width: .160 .200
Overall: 6 ½” 8 ¼”
Weight: 3.5 oz. 8 oz.

I have a Sogwinder I, got it used a few years ago. They are strong knives!

so i m thinking that the sogwinder was the first sog knives folder to have a thumb stud.
and that it was an attempt at creating a folding fighter?
btw the sog gentleman is a bolsterless and scaleless sogwinder 1,
wouldn't you think?

Okay, but there seems to also be a Sog Sidwinder. Is this true? If you look on the bay you will find both. I don't know the differences or if the folks on the bay even know what or which one they have. There is one distinct difference though. It seems the Sogwinder has a dual brass thumbstud. The other version of the unknown knife has a single sided thumbstud that is removable with a Philips head. Which is what? Or are the same just different versions? Are the two names legit?

Many sellers who list the Sogwinder for sale on the "bay" list the name incorrectly. They list the knife as "Sidwinder" or "Sidewinder", but SOG does not make a "Sidwinder"/"Sidewinder" knife based on the catalogs I have seen from years 1989 to the present.

The Sogwinder which you are referring to which has the thumb stud on left side of the blade and with the attachment screw on the right side of the blade is the "Sogwinder I". It is the knife which closely resembles the Sog Stingray with the big difference being the blade style, i.e. "drop point" blade and thumb stud.
The "Sogwinder II" is the knife which closely resembles the Sog Tomcat, again, with the significant difference in the blade style, again the "drop point" blade and thumb stud. The "Sogwinder II" is significantly larger than the "Sogwinder I".

I hope this sheds a bit of light on the Sogwinder knives. However if some should find a genuine Sog "Sidwinder" or "Sidewinder", please feel free to enlighten me because I truly enjoy learning.

I don't know if it was an attempt to create a fighter by adding the thumb stud, but I tend to agree that the Sogwinder was the first Sog knife with thumb studs.

Also, I agree that the "Gentleman" looks like a Sogwinder I without bolsters and scales.

Okay, thank you. That clears a lot up. So back to the thumb stud on the Sogwinder, why are there some with the dual brass ones and some with the single sided removable phillips head black ones? Is that a function of the "I" vs "II" or different production time period variations?

Thanks everyone. It does seem that there was a SOGwinder 1 and 2.
The "Sidewinder" name doesn't exist as far as the manufacturer is concerned.
Looked at an awful lot of photos on the internet and that seems right.

Check out posting #4 in this thread. "Dual-sided brass-type thumb stud" on Sogwinder II; "Single-sided stainless steel-type thumb stud" on Sogwinder I.

I have the gentleman and the sogwinder. The blade profile and handle are identical, but the gentleman sog blade and handle are about 50% thinner. I luv em both including the aus6a steel that so many like to trash :). Classic tacticool!

Aus6 was THE tech super steel of its day,
In fact al mar knives from that period was largely aus6
A brand with a product line which was and still is,
Highly collectable and far more expensive.
Given the same Seki steel reputation.
One would be hard pressed to find any logical valid reason
As to why the classic sogs shouldn't be just as valuable as vintage al mars.

Anyhow, the sog gent IMO,
Appears somewhat "naked" and unfinished with out scales
Which would have helped to define the handle's outlining profile details.
Understandably though, the idea was for a flat light weight gents knife.
Guess, that made it more affordable having a lower production cost.
The good part is that it is one solid chunk of steel with no soft parts to decay.
The gent is destined to outlast several owners
provided it's pivot or back spring isn't worn.

The gent is slim and disappears in the pocket. Some say it is difficult to open, but i am used to it. It is a "solid pice of steel." Sog's aus6a takes a fine edge and holds it as ine would expect, ~RC57 IIRC. The sogwinder being wider fits the hand better. And the kraton is good and grippy.

I have a sogwinder 2 purchased new about 15 yrs ago. Only carried a few times. Never sharpened. In as new condition. No box or sheath. Any idea of knives value? Thanks.
